I don't really approve of it, and it would never happen in a Western democracy, but when you're a guest in a country, you really do have to conform to their standards and respect their laws, no matter how messed up they are.

Why should we get their religion forced down our fucking necks? Since when have we ( do NOT go far back on this ) shoved our religion down their necks? How are "they" forcing religion down "our" necks?  She was in Sudan, not Britain.  She went to Sudan, they didn't come here to impose their beliefs.  If a non-Christian teacher named a teddybear Jesus here, nothing drastic would happen, but its because our cultures are different.  Sorry, but everyone cannot be a white European with international culture - deal with it.

The fact that people live there willingly and abide willingly by the rules and customs is evidence that people ARE OK with this type of life.  It may be a different culture, but that doesn't mean that it is wrong.  This isn't the turn of the century, there is no "White Man's Burden" here.  Remember how far "civilizing the savages" got the West?  You don't agree with it?  Fine.  No one is forcing you to go to Sudan anytime soon, I am sure.  She will probably get fined, and learn her lesson - which is, "don't piss off the local culture".  Any person that travels knows this.

Yes, I read the article. She is a guest. Working or visiting, if you're not a citizen, you're a guest.

I don't think you understand the concept of borders, or the prerogative to rule your nation like you wish. I can watch TV for entertainment if I want to, but I don't have to entertain media executives in return. I can read articles written by journalists, but I don't need to write stories for these journalists if I don't want to. People enjoy freedom of speech in some Western countries, but that does not mean that Western citizens enjoy the same freedoms in other countries.

You're contrasting the laws of one country with the laws of another, and expecting them to be absolutely identical. That's just very misguided thinking. "Your" way isn't the "right" way. There are a million different ways, and they're all "right" to a million different people.

She is not a muslim, but she has to abide by the laws of the country, just like tourists can't walk around in Germany posing with swastikas freely on account of their foreign citizenship. If you expect your moral positions and the laws of your society to apply when you're abroad, you're being arrogant.

Although it's a common you shouldn't refer to a guy as Mohammed.  It's usually a name given to the child in honour of the prophet, you should really be using the second name i.e.

Mohammed Marine Grape, would and should be referred to as Marine, and never mohammed.  That's how it works. 

And lastly with free speech is coupled with responsibility.  Use it irresponsibly expect irresponsible responses.

Free speech is coupled with responsitiblity. You cannot call the reaction to those cartoons irresponsible though. More like irrational or psychotic. It's also funny you should mention free speech... Because the idea of free speech is you can say anything without fear of violent reprisals. So, according to free speech as implied by the Australian constitution I am justified in saying Mohummad was a delusional sociopath. Expressing one's opinion in visual, written or oral formats should never, ever be reacted to with violence. If somebody disagrees with the idea of free speech as it pertains to religion, then they should probably move to a country like Saudi Arabia, which shares their ideals.



Next, it's not the teacher's fault. Blame the students and do what you will to them, they made the decision. Parenting: Because your kids are your responsibility, whether you chose to admit it or not.


Lastly, @ m3th: are you really Islamic? If so, have you been to Mecca? I want to go there one day, sounds pretty incredible. The idea of free speech is just that an idea.  If it's going to be used irresponsibly expect as you have correct stated psychotic responses, unless law enforcement can do otherwise i guess.  It's just that the reality is far, far different.  This is how i see it, if i went up a black fella in Harlen and called him a nig nog....he's not going to shake my hand and congratulate me for exercising my right to free speech.  I'd expect his 12 incher in my ass and me being forced to moan his name

Although I detest that punishment would occur over something as this, I wouldn't mind playing devil's advocate. Should she not respect the culture of Sudan, and their religion, as many Westerners demand of Islamic people immigrating to our countries?
