A few minutes ago I got this offer from a store (I registered so it's not dodgy spam) for a videocard. Now I was planning on buying a new one anyway, but I'm not a proffesional gamer. E.g. I enjoy playing BF2 hotseat with my little brother (die and swap seats ) and it's just to increase performance (we currently play on an Ati x600 256mb passive cooling). In any case I'm not willing to spend more than a hundred euro's on upgrading a basic Dell PC. It's not about not having the money to pay, it's about just not being willing to pay (so please save me the; "save money for a Nvidia GTHZX 80K Quad-Sli" comments or something).



So this is the card I found, and I would like to know if it's any good, any significant improvement compared to what I got now.

I also found this card. It has active cooling (me like fancy moving parts, but it may also mean an increase in power requirements and in the worst case having to upgrade my basic Dell PSU), dual DVI (I use VGA, but they can be plugged into DVI adapters and with a dual mode I can plug in two screens) and is faster (540Mhz instead of 460Mhz, does that matter much?). It does however cost 30 euros more (which is quite alot relatively in this price range) and is made by Asus instead of MSI (MSI is better right?). Evidently the Asus card may preform better, but which one is the best deal price/quality-wise?

The 8600GT (Asus) is alot better. Out of those two, i'd go for that. You could easily play games like BF2 (BF2 quite well infact) and CoD4 with that card

an 8600GT for 98 Euro's is quite good actually

Although, try and get an 8600GT with 256MB and GDDR3 memory instead. Lemme see if I can find anything

I would recommend this: http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html but they dont have results for the x600 or the 8500. You can get an idea of how the 8600 performs compared to other cards though.

the 8600 is a lot more powerful than the 8500. The 8500 is more designed for HTPC use

If youre just going to be playing BF2 and not any DX10 games dont bother with an 8 series card, get a 7600, its cheaper and works just fine for DX9 games.

I think the 7900 is way more expensive than the 8600. I could be wrong though but thats how the pricing is on newegg.

What's the difference because I really don't know anything about GDDR3 memory .

Yep I'm playing on XP home, so that'll be DX9. But 7600 GS cards don't seem to be much cheaper, I might as well get an 8 series then right?



P.S. Other Specs: P4 630 (3.0Ghz 64-bit single-core) with BTX/CTX cooling (can't remember which one, but it is encased in a black box with a fan on the exterior) and 2Gb DC RAM.

Any graphics card will basically kill a BTX Dell. Sorry to say. Change to a real motherboard, chassis and PSU.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I don't mean to be rude, but such comments aren't really helpfull. If you make a comment like "your system sucks", I'm not unwilling to accept that it does; but I would appreciate if you could be a bit more specific. E.g. I have a PCI-E card in my Dell right now, so why would another card kill it; also please define "killing". Or why would one not be able to upgrade a BTX based Dell? It has different slots like any other PC with screws like any other PC and connected by cables like any other PC; what would deter me from say taking out my PSU and putting a new one in?

I'm not saying your PC sucks; I have a P4 630 as my primary gaming computer's CPU myself. What I'm saying is, that the power supplies Dell gives away with their BTX computers are shit, and it seems like the motherboards aren't very compatible with anything. I have first-hand experience from that. The one I had had a retarded PSU in all ways. Could only find new ones from the Dell site, and they went for 100+€ for 400w...
