Well, you must get The National. They are absolutely excellent. I have to buy them as well, it seems that there is no decent quality download.

The Smiths are not very good. Poor actual music, their singing is average.

The Blur are quite nice to listen to, but I wouldn't call them rock, by any means.

I hope that helps you.
Your comments about The Smiths, plus the fact that you call the band 'The Blur', suggests to me that you are a poorly-educated rock novice . What you have just said could be considered blasphemy in many circles, and you could quite possibly find yourself crucified or hanging by dawn. There is abso-fucking-lutely no way that you can call 'The National' excellent, and then say that The Smiths are poor. Perhaps you're being confused by the recording quality, after all, The Smiths are before 'our time'- as far as contemporary bands go. But, one things for sure, is that any self-proclaimed 'indie' band or English-rock band will pretty much take musical tips straight from Morrissey and others in that vein of music.

The Smiths aren't even categorically 'rock' anyway, I'm not sure why they were in this discussion in the first place...

So, to repeat my first recommendations: The Pixies, Modest Mouse (earlier stuff), Radiohead (early albums such as Pablo, Honey).

I have never liked the Doors. Probably because of their slow music. They have some good songs though.

Raven, I couldn't really judge the Smiths very well, I have their album in 128KBPS....

Finally! People who like The National! And buy it... buy it now!

And ouch... you just called the band that originated alternative rock "not very good"...

And yes, Blur are Britpop... but still rock, too - although they cover a wide range, I'll give you that (how could you not have heard of them!?!?!?).
Any song from The National that you particularly suggest to influence me? I'm listening to Apartment Story on Youtube right now, it seems pretty nice. Mellow, with a mix of soft rock. I like it.

I like all ranges of rock, btw. From the soft rock of Eric Clapton to the classics of Bob Dylan (who I'm named after). From Aerosmith to ZZ Top, to Megadeth and Metallica.

i havent bought any CDs in a while due to the fact, twice now it happened. but assholes have stolen my whole CD case. both time easily worth $1000. due to these unfortunate incidents i use a not so welcomed approached to getting music.

edit: the other down fall is you pay $15+ for a cd and has a max 5 good songs.

If you can send me the Smiths in excellent music quality - 200+ KBPS ( I can give you my RS account and you can up them ) then I will re-listen. But I have such shit quality on my computer that I can't really comment. They may be really awesome. I just need better quality music files.

Pos, listen to Fake Empire by The National.

Atreyu (punk/metalcore)
R.E.M. (rock I guess? I like them)
Pearl Jam
Rush
Nine Inch Nails? Very, uhm, peculiar style that Reznor has though... hard to describe IMO

You like the metal eh?
Metallica - Everything through Garage Inc. is good. Yeah, Black Album and Garage Inc. might not be heavy like their earlier stuff, but it's still good music.

Megadeth - Rust In Peace, or their Greatest Hits (Back to the Start) CD

Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast, Powerslave

Killswitch Engage - As Daylight Dies

Anti-Flag - For Blood and Empire

Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil

RAGE AGAINST THE FUCKING MACHINE - All their albums, even the live one (Just in case you are slow... there's no "fucking" in their real name

System of a Down - Toxicity (Daron's voice kind of annoys me, but he's not as prevalent in this album as he was in the later ones)

Also, Zimmer/Jord/DarkRaven, I listened to Fake Empire...you got me hooked. Damn. Incredible song.

Go buy the following albums, then put away your wallet, you're done for the rest of your days:

Led Zeppelin: I, II, III, IV, Physical Graffiti, Houses of the Holy

The Who: Quadrophenia, Who's Next, My Generation, Happy Jack, Tommy - or you could buy Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy (greatest hits thing)

Pink Floyd: The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon

AC/DC: High Voltage, Dirty Deeds, Back in Black, Highway to Hell

The Rolling Stones: Some Girls, Aftermath, Sticky Fingers, Let It Bleed

Rush: Fly By Night, Farewell to Kings, Caress of Steel, 2112, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures

ZZ Top: Tres Hombres, Deguello, Fandango

Social Distortion: Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell

Jethro Tull: Standup, Benefit, Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, Living in the Past, Minstrel In the Gallery

Bad Company: Ten from Six (greatest hits)

You buy those records, and you are set for life. You could listen to those albums and nothing more for the rest of your life, and be happy.

Doesn't anybody remember GUNS & ROSES!?!?!?!

Appetite for Destruction
Lies
Use Your Illusion I & II

admittedly The Spaghetti Incident? was a stinker, and Chinese Democracy is taking forever.
But they were the 'IT' band of the late 80s and early 90s.

Zep - I have most of their songs from single downloads but I'm gonna check those out.

Pink Floyd - I have Dark Side of the Moon, but The Wall is another one that looks great. Heard nothing but good things about it. HOW COULD YOU HAVE ANY PUDDING IF YOU DON'T EAT YOUR MEAT!!!

The Who - I'm gonna pick up Quadrophenia. I already have 5.15, and if the rest of the album is as epic as that, well it must be kickass. I've always loved The Who, and they're in my top 10 favorite bands. Who's Next I already have.

AC/DC - My friend actually just burned me each of those CDs, so I'm set.

Rolling Stones - Might check those out too, or if I'm running out of money (I have $100 to spend) I'll just buy the Greatest Hits CD.

Rush - Tom Sawyer and Limelight were always some of my favorite songs. I'm gonna see which of those most appeals to me.

ZZ Top - I only have like 4 songs from them I like, so I'll check that out as well. ZZ Top always has a good guitar/drum beat that goes together.

Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath is yet another one of my all time favorites, so I'll take a gander into their stuff too.

Bad Company - If the rest of the album has songs like Rock and Roll Fantasy, fuck yes.

Thanks.
