Article's too long to paste in here. It has been said over and over again that this is what those public databases would lead to. Why do people still approve of them?

Don't get me wrong, i think people have a right to their privacy. But that includes children. It's the modern day equivalent of the scarlet letter, arguably in a more noble application, but in the end still the same beast.

those databases are a load of bullshit, if you ask me. How are people that have been released from prison supposed to be able to successfully re-integrate with society, if their names and places of residence are made public ?
That is bound to provoke negative reactions, the results of which can be seen in above mentioned article.

You either believe in re-socialization, or you don't. But if you do, don't throw ex-cons to the lions. You might just as well lock them up indefinitely.

I appreciate the databases. I do not want to integrate with a neighbor who dipped his nuts in a little girl's mouth, or who had committed some similar crime. If they're going to be releasing these maniacs into public, people have a right to know so, if they've any sense, they can steer the heck clear and keep their eyeballs peeled.

One possible way to avoid getting your name put in a "you're f*cked forever" list is to not boink anybody who doesn't want to be boinked, or anyone else whom to boink would be illegal.

well, why do only sex offenders appear on that list then ? Why not murderers or other criminals ? Wouldn't you agree that those who have paid their dues to society by completing a lengthy jail sentence deserve a fair chance to re-integrate ?

It probably has to do with a differential in the rate of recidivism between the types of crimes. Those convicted of sex crimes against children are far more likely to continue committing the crimes, even after treatment.

I think those who prey on children should be locked up indefinitely. Then there's no threat and no list and everyone's happy. Since our justice system insists on releasing these people upon society, my practical side as a parent appreciates the databases. It's public record anyway that they've been convicted and people who are arrested or receive citations are published in many city and state newpapers, too. Wall of Shame type thing. Shall we eliminate these lists because someone might go nuts and break another law by assaulting or killing a convicted sexual predator? There are plenty of ways to get one's rocks off without attacking a child or another adult so forgive me for not shedding a tear for one less criminal . . .

The New York Times reports that the New York Philharmonic has accepted an invitation to play in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang in February. The Times says the trip will be the "first significant cultural visit by Americans to that country."

The timing of the announcement - to be made formally today at Avery Fisher Hall - is auspicious, coming amid a series of breakthroughs in the decade-long effort to have North Korea halt its nuclear program.

Just last week, President Bush, who had once consigned North Korea to the "axis of evil," sent a letter to Kim Jong-Il, the country's leader, suggesting ties between their countries could improve if North Korea fully disclosed all nuclear programs and got rid of nuclear weapons.

Although State Department officials have authenticated the invitation and been involved in the planning since it arrived, they appeared to have nothing to do with it originally.

The invitation arrived by fax in August, in the form of a typed letter form the North Korean culture ministry, in English, accompanied by a cover letter from a private individual in California who said he was acting as an intermediary.

Ambassador Christopher Hill, the Bush administration's main diplomat for negotiations with North Korea, said he didn't know how the invitation came about.

Some have questioned the wisdom of visiting a country run by one of the world's most repressive governments, the Times notes. North Korea's politics have been blamed in part for the famine-related starvation of perhaps two million people and it confines hundreds of thousands of people in labor camps.

Hill acknowledged that any kind of opening lends legitimacy to the North Korean government, "but not opening up has not had any positive in bringing North Korea out of its shell."
