Yes.  I wasn't in a fire fight in Cykla, Iraq for fun.  I hope I made at least one persons life better.  If not, at least I hope my actions may have saved the life of a fellow Marine so they could still be at home with their kids or something like that.

If my death was to some great benefit. Yes.  Knowing when (if) to identify that situation is pretty unlikely though.

I think most parents would give their lives for their kids or spouse in the right circumstance.  For my country???  That's a toss up but not likely.  I used to be a flag waving patriot who thought my country was infallible (yep, I flew my flags before 9/11/01) and my government and people worth my sacrifice.  That illusion has diminished considerably over the course of this president's terms.  For individuals, possibly under the right circumstances...can't think of any at the moment, but sure.  It would have to seriously outweigh the loss of me raising my kids and being a loving husband to my wife before giving my life for one of you.

*shrugs*  This is one of those questions you can't honestly answer until you are faced with a situation where it would be relevant.  I've never faced a situation like this, so I really don't know....

Only to save a loved one or family member.

If my country were attacked I'd fight to defend it (on the basis of the above statement I just made) but I wouldn't die, I'd just make sure we won and I survived.

I've already done too many things that have made my life shit, just so someone else's is better, most of the time they don't even realise. I don't know whether I'd take the final step though, haven't been in a situation like that. It depends.

The only instance would be one where a child of mine required it. As there is no 'afterlife' trading your own life or giving it up is a sacrifice that makes no sense whatsoever. You get one shot, one opportunity: use it.

probably yes, depending on the circumstances. Difficult to say now, sitting in my comfy armchair. It's like asking someone what they'd do in a life or death situation, war for example. You just don't know until the situation comes up.

What I would definitely not do, however, is simply trade my life for someone else's, with no apparent benefits for a greater cause.

I would package it up in a box, say 4" x 6", tie a green ribbon on the lid and give it to one of those poor unfortunate people, you know the ones....er....whadaya call 'em, err...lawyers. I know that would make at least one person happy. Or maybe a taxi driver.

Would you?

Not to trade with someone in a better situation with you...but to make someone else's life better/allow them to live.

If so, what situation would drive you to that decision?

I have my own thoughts...I will wait for some additional responses before weighing in.
My love for my wife and children would drive me to that decision.  It is my duty to protect them and, if necessary, give up my life to allow them to live.  I'd like to say I'd do it for someone else, but since it would leave my children fatherless and my wife without my support, I can't say I wouldn't hesitate.  Another situation would be if I came upon a woman or child being attacked.  But I don't think I'd have to give up my life because I'd have a good chance of coming out alive.  For my country, if I needed to defend my homeland from foreign invaders, I would gladly serve and, if necessary, give up my life so the way of life I defended could continue.  However, I prefer General Patton's stance on that issue.

I'd give my life to my family, a very close friend, and that's it. I wouldn't ever give my life up for a "God" that's just stupid.

For someone in dire need, either a friend, family member or even a stranger whose life is in danger I would risk myself to help.
