As a measure to safeguard several things: 1) that their clerks are doing their jobs honestly; 2) to curb theft; 3) to ensure proper charges applied to items; many retail stores (club and non-club) make you do the "walk of shame" as you exit the store and ask to see your receipt then verify your goods.
To many, this is just an accepted thing that does not generate second thoughts about compliance.
To others, it is a violation of privacy and often leads to questions of your 4th amendment protection (Americans) against unlawful search and seizure.
FACTS: No store policy, even club contract policy, can require you to forfeit your constitutional right and protection by allowing someone to review your receipt or goods. No law enforcement officer can respond to a situation with probable cause and arrest you, identify you (though the stupid patriot act may let him), or give any credence to the loss prevention clerk when you refuse to submit to a receipt check. You can lose membership in such clubs like Costco, Sam's, etc for not complying, and regular retail stores can "ban" you and arrest you for tresspassing if you fail to comply (which you could probably sue them for in a discrimination suit and win), but you cannot be made to submit.
So then. What is your reaction to these loss prevention clerks/security guards when you walk out of Best Buy with your brand new plasma display that you just legally purchased? Sheep or Goat?
