Why not a 3850.

and it dosent really break the bank.
You will save money in the long term.

You know he's right.  I dunno if it is just me but there is so much hype over that GT, I forget about the 3850/70.

im running 2 x 7950 which kicks ass still, sure its not dx10 but I did spend 500 on one and 250 on the other a year later so im not looking forward to buying another video card anytime soon.  I feel if I was to buy a 8800 I would see a lose in score do to the fact im down grading from 2 cards to 1, SLI kicks ass.   

BTW My vista score is 5.9 on everything but processor, which is 5.3 so I will be upgrading that first.

But, your friend doesnt have a 7950 yet, and its like 200 bucks,  I would never spend that much on old technology so I would either go with the 3850 or a slim down 8800.  Like someone said above you dont need to run dx10 just because you have a card that supports it.  XP still boots with no problems.

Yeah, but at what games and what resolutions. If, for example, the DX9 card has more memory and they run a game at some crazy 1800x1000 resolution then the DX9 will probably win, from sheer bandwidth. If your friend is running a more reasonable resolution, the 8600GT will start to pull ahead more.

As people are seeing, the problem is with the enthusiast level cards, it's no straight price/performance line, it's a very steep curve. Even with the next gen out, the true top of the line cards are still going to cost you.

From what benchmarks I've seen, the 8600GT/GTS seems to be just about the same as a 7600GS/GT. But with DX10 capabilities, wich will be very usable on such a slow card...

For old GTS, this with the signs switched is correct.

However, when adding the new GTS it goes:

G80 GTS<GT<GTX<G92 GTS (given the lower cost, lower power consumption, and greater ease of overclock with near identical stock performances)<Ultra

GTS (G80) < GT = GTX < GTS (G92) < Ultra
