Ok, thanks everyone for the help. What I'm hearing though is that its a hardware issue (whether it be Ram or Video Card) and not something I can go and fix. Is this right?

Edit: if I do end up getting the new computer then I should be better off with a better video card and 2 Gb of Ram.

I think that it is just an issue with the engine CoD4 uses (like how efficient it uses its resources to render graphics or something of the like) because there are some pretty decent specs posted on here and all of them are saying that they are struggling with medium settings. If you don't think you can compare BF2 and CoD4, then I'll compare 2142 and CoD4. I can run 2142 maxed as well with my current specs with little to no problem (granted I seem to studder a bit within the midst of a heavy Orbital Strike but nonetheless....).

The problem is like you say your computer is old, it just cant run it right. There is some cheap ram available now so for sure get 2 gigs. Then what ever else you can afford, may be a card. But i personaly think ATI are shit.
All of that is complete bullshit IMHO except for the fact that I've never really had too many good experiences with ATI either...

You just can't compare... 2142 is built on the BF2 engine.. Even my 7900GTO 512mb is among the low-medium level rig nowadays... The next-gen games made today are made to run full (highest) gfx, only on the latest and greates GFX cards like the 8800GTS (G92)...

You honestly can't expect to run anything above low on a 7300 card these days.... It would be stupid to demand more than medium from my 7900GTO too, simply because it is getting old and outdated...

If you compare anything, use a game from the same year, like COD4 and HL2:EP2...

It is not due to poor programming or bad optimisation that these new games run bad on your old-ass gfx card... It is simply because of the progress beeing made in the tech. field... If you wan't something that runs a new game great on 5 year-old hardware, go buy a console !! Because when you have a PC you have to put up with the upgrades now and then,,, with a console, you won't have to upgrade but you will be lacking the latest graphics technology after the 1st year of the consoles lifespand....

How can you not understand that? I'm not a huge expert on ping but if you take one look at the word you can understand how it works. How's this, I'll re-write it for you.

Ping works just as it sounds. It sends a signal to a "beacon" or a set point (if you will) and takes the time it takes to get a signal back; hence the Millisecond unit of measurement.

Yea I know its way too detailed but I couldn't believe you didnt understand his statement so I thought I'd make it infailable to comprehend.

*Sigh* here it goes:

There are two kinds of lag, latency lag (ie: ping) that is caused by distance from the server, or if someone else is on your network downloading, making the packets you need from the server come slower (how fast your connection is doesn't really matter).

Then there is FPS lag (low frames per second), which means that your computer is rendering the game slowly, making your game refresh less therefore making it annoying and hard to play.

Understand?

FYI FPS drop is not lag (i know that is what some people call it, but it is infact not),, lag is network only

It seems to be...In lamest terms, un-smooth. Its not really laggy, per-say, atleast not the way lagg is in BF. It's just....un-smooth.

Is there anyway to fix it? I have 1 Gb of Ram but I keep the performance monitor up on my keyboard so I can monitor it and it usually only uses around 88%-95% (which I think is fine and won't be the problem). I turned down the graphical settings a bit and that seemed to help a bit so I'm thinking its a video card thing. Maybe, is it just sheer processor speed? My computer is a little bit old so it's only at like 2.2 Ghz or something close to that. Or, is it just a matter of using the right combo of settings? I'm also maybe thinking of getting a new computer with 2.4 Ghz, 2 Gb, and an ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB.

All help/ideas are appreciated.

HA!

(where i am from)
Console games cost 150% of what a PC game costs, and then you have to live with that hardware config the rest of the consoles lifespand (~3-5 years), when you get to those 3 last years of console life, the PC will be racing away in performance and games will be better on the PC only HELD BACK by the consoles...

And tbh: a PC gives you a workstation, internet browser, gaming + endless posssibilities whereas a console only gives you gaming + a crappy internetbrowser in some cases...

i have a decent pc M8. i do all my work, browsing on my pc, and that is what is for. i upgraded my pc 3 years ago, spent a crap load of money, and it is not worth even 10% of what is out there now. i have an 6800 GT nvidia 256mb card before, but that thing cant run crysis or cod4 with 1/2 of the eye candy.

another thing you forgot m8, i cant sell back pc games, but i can sell back xbox360 games. your right, pc outperform consoles= if you have killer hardware. and my friend, there is an emphasis in the word IF.

cod 4 runs fine in a xb360 and even better in a powerful pc.

one more point m8, i rather spend 250-300 US dollars and spend $60 dollars on an xbox 360 game, beat it and sell it back for half price on EB games than spend $2-$4,000.00 US on a pc upgrade, then spend $50.00 on a pc game, beat it, and i cant sell it back to EB games.. all your points are valid, except you forgot the law of economics m8.

me and my best friend have been in the gaming business for a very long time. we used to break open the bank and blow a shit load of money on upgrades just to play awsome games like cod4 . we both have regular xbox and xbox 360 consoles/ games. and after all this time the xbox360 came out, it was no longer viable to go to newegg.com and grab every killer videocard/ dual core processor just for it to be worth zero 3 years later.

Thats precisely why I was referring to it as being "un-smooth" as opposed to saying lag because it isn't ping or connection that's my problem.

Aight, let's call that "chop" as in "choppy framerate"

Agree?
Thats precisely why I was referring to it as being "un-smooth" as opposed to saying lag because it isn't ping or connection that's my problem.
what arrogance did i display you dumbass. thats the damn freakin truth that every pc gamer realizes. where i come from m8, gas is just about $4.00 a gallon . if you cant understand simple economics, then your worse than a noob.
Ouch, I envy you, it's around $9 a gallon here

Wow. Ok, well, specialistx and Hooligan are officially arrogant pricks. If you don't have anything good to say, just get the fuck out and go cry about how shitty your life is elsewhere. We don't need shit like that on here.

As for the good responses, I have a 360 but I'm not going to waste another $60 on a game I already have for crappier controls.

That's fucking arrogance right there you dumbass. For one, you think everyone that plays a game (including all the little kids) knows every-fucking-piece of shit there is to know about computers; and two, don't think that your home is the only place in the world that matters/has it bad. Gas will be/is $4.00+ here as well. You better kiss your ass and be thankful that it isn't around £2 (I'm not sure what the exchange rate is now but I think thats around a total of $8 for a gallon here) a liter like it is/will soon come to be some places. So just shut up already and stop being an arrogant dumbass and derailing a thread in forums that have no need for your kind of posts.

As for Floppy's response, I guess I had missed that post from earlier. I think that if I get a new computer with that graphics card  posted earlier and 2-3 Gb of Ram, that it will help a lot. Thanks.
