The zoo is certainly at fault, but not because they didn't have tranq darts ready to go. It looks like the tiger escaped its compound. If that is the case, you can't expect them to have had a tranq rifle ready to go...there was no reason to. They don't just walk around the zoo with a tranq rifle ready to go for every animal there. The tiger escaping its compound is obviously an unexpected event, hence, they wouldn't have had any reason to have tranqs ready to go. Totally different than if they had been working on its compound...I believe it's SOP to have tranqs ready to go whenever they are dealing with dangerous animals in their compounds.
A fire is an unexpected event, but you know that firemen will show up if one starts.  The tiger scaping its compund was unexpected, but the zoo should have considered this could happen.
Sure, they show up and kill the fire.

As was done here.

That's how it was supposed to happen by nature.  The cops had to shoot the tiger, ok there was no other choice.  But I still feel sorry for the tiger.

Yea but it happend right before closing time at 6pm. . . . And the zoo didnt think 3 idiots were planning on fucking with the animal at that point.

Either way, its sad and never should have happend!!! Those kids got what they deserved fucking with a wild animal, and the cops had no other alternative given the circumstance (You realize the tiger was approaching them, and they had no other choice but to defend themselves with their pistols).  They were the first on the scene and consequently acted the way cops normally act when threatend.  If zoo officials were their first I'm sure the animal wouldnt have been shot and killed.

Shows you how shitty our zoo is!!!

I feel aweful that another tiger is dead, but again its human stupidity that caused a beautiful animal to meet its death.  Fuck those three shitheads!! If you are too stupid to fuck with a 300 lb tiger, then you deserve the consequences!!

btw that zoo is an absolute toilet (trust me I have been their a dozen plus times).  I personally think they should close the joint and relocate the animals to San Diego or somewhere else where they have more room to run around.
Good post.  Damn those 3 kids!!!!  The tiger was shot coz of their idiocy.  This is what I was talking about in the other thread, most people think animals are there for their amusement.  Fuck them.  I saw a video with Tatiana, the tiger, a few days before this and I tell you she didn't look happy.  Fuck the SF zoo, hope it gets closed.

But firemen don't walk around every neighborhood with fire extinguishers, every gauge of hose, every nozzle type, ladders of varying lengths...you get my point.

Like I said, its a toilet of a zoo. . .

I have been there as a kid and as an adult and have no clue why the city of San Francisco intends on keeping this hell hole in operation.  The animals ARENT happy, they mope around and look depressed!! The exhibits are dated, the animals have no where to move, and the city is cold all the time!!  It is in no way shape or form a nice place for a zoo!! There are plenty of areas in the Bay Area they could build a beautiful zoo to house these animals, and they continue to keep that dump operational.

The place SHOULD BE CLOSED, this is another instance that just happend to make national news.  There are always little blurbs at how badly operated and run that zoo is in the local press that never makes the national headlines. . .  close it now and relocate the poor animals!1

You forgot to copy the next line:

"But he also said the enclosure had passed safety inspections. "

Hmmm, so now H&S inspectors are to blame too. Even though that height is only "recommended"...it is NOT definitive or has to be strictly adhered to. The wording of that means that they could actually get off the hook slightly.

But not the maimed kids or the dead one? Or their families, friends, relatives, teachers, enemies and everybody else who knew them that this will cause grief too? On christmas day of all days? "Merry Christmas, heres your mauled kid back". Or, in one instance, "Merry Christmas your son has been eaten".

Why is it that a lot of people are feeling sorry for a Tiger, but yet not one person that I have seen has expressed any sympathy towards the people involved, the families and all the aforementioned parties too. In fact, all that I have read is that they were idiots. Maybe, but does that mean that they "deserved" to get killed? I think not.

Are you kidding me?  That would be the animal equivilant of a Level 1 Trauma Center for Humans available 24/7.

If you live in the US you're lucky to live with 1 hour of such a facility.  The costs would be prohibitive.

I'm gonna check with the Philadelphia Zoo.  I know they have a well respected program.
I checked with the Philadelphia Zoo.  They are well known and respected zoological garden, one of the first in the country.

They have a hospital and Vets on site during the day but on-call at all other times.

The following is their response to my inquirey:

The Philadelphia Zoo has a veterinary staff and hospital.  The veterinary staff is on the grounds during the day and on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Unlike a general veterinarian, Zoo veterinarians have been especially trained to care for exotic animals of all kinds, including reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, fish, and invertebrates.  Since the Philadelphia Zoo has about 1400 animals on the grounds as well as numerous local animals that invade the grounds, there are always animals in need of veterinary care as a result of illness or injury.  Having a veterinary staff accessible at all times is necessary, not just to treat animals that are ill or injured, but also to prevent outbreaks of diseases that might be spread to the Zoo's animals by local invading animals such as birds and rodents.  The cost of having a veterinary staff is not prohibitive; is not an unnecessary expense; and is not a waste of resources.

Weird...our local news said the wall was 18 feet tall with a 20 foot mote.  So the investigation findings MUST be wrong because the news is a responsible outlet of truth always fact checking their sources for reliability!  Especially our FOX affiliate KTVU channel 2!

Oh god are you going to make a Republican swipe at the local FOX affiliate. . . .  grow the fuck up!

KTVU is the most watched and is not biased dude!! If you watched, they talked to various people saying that ONLY human intervention here caused the tiger to get out of its enclosure.  The authorities KNOW that the tiger couldnt have gotten out by itself, and found shit at the scene indicating that someone tampered with the exhibit.  Basically the 3 idiots fucked with the tiger, somehow thought it would be cool for it to get out, and got mauled. . . . end of story.

How bout you chill some and stop being the politics police?  I've said nothing political.  Further, I wasn't even suggesting a way the tiger got out.  I had just read some of the investigative findings and the wall was actually shorter than it was reported..that's it.  I wasn't trying to find blame..just pointing out bad reporting.

I actually prefer 10 o'clock news with Dennis "Sannnnn-Francisco" Richmond over other channels and realize they're nothing like Fox Noise's Right Wing Propaganda Outlet (there, you happy?).  But "news" is still news, and even KTVU in the bay area gets it wrong plenty (albeit probably less than KPIX)..which point I was making...they obviously didn't fact check jack by saying in their initial broadcasts that it was an 18' wall when it wasn't.

It just occurred to me, being the "typical" paranoid hater many of you republican types are, you simply ONLY see things like this as a pinko-commie-tree-hugging-sheehan/moore/moveon-liberal attack, though it was not intended in the least to being a politically motivated comment.  Come on, be honest...it's how you reacted, right?

From what I've read the authorities are investigating just what the victems were doing at the zoo.

That aside, I've also read that the zoo's fence was not up to widely accepted standards.

Same. I also heard the two victims have not been upfront with the police and lied to Father of the other deceased victim when he called one of them asking where his son was. Interesting story.

There's a lesson for all you kids at home.

After you get drunk & high you probably shouldn't taunt carnivores.

Play a video game instead.
