Hey this is prob a noob question. I need to put my computer on sleep cuz i often fall asleep with it on watching tv on it. and i run up the electric bill.. Do i just go to Control Panel>Power settings>and then turn of hard dicks in _____ amount of time? cuz when i choose the option for system standup i wake up in the morning and its on
Contrary to popular belief, most systems actually still run at full power even in standby. I recommend shutting the system off entirely at night!

Great for those of us who like listening to music while falling asleep.
edit: What it does: Shuts down your computer after x amount of minutes/hours or at a specific time, and can be used to turn down volume by time.

turn off monitor- 1 hour (or w.e.)
turn off hard disk - 1 hour (as above)
system standby - 1 hour (as above)
should do it

Kyle's probably right though.
"people in ny have a general idea of how to drive. one of the pedals goes forward the other one prevents you from dying"
System standby after, say 2 hours should work. If it fails to work put turn off hard disks to a low amount of time, so you will at least save some electrity.

not really dude. when in standby my fans shut completely off. if my shit was running at full power something would fry. passive cooling won't keep a processor running at idle speeds going strong.kylef wrote:

maybe this is true for shitty dells and whatnot, but most higher end PCs would have to cut power to all but ram to stay alive, unless the fans were still running.
I have 2 computers on 24/7, of wich one is a power-hungry 4.2GHz beast. Our power bill is never over 100€/month.
Unless your PSU is complete and utter shit, it won't use as much power.
Yes. CPU is basically off, chipset on very low power, graphics card off, hard drives off.Ender2309 wrote:

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Falling a sleep should take care of the hard dick after watching TV.
Don't worry.
Don't worry.
exactly. electricity has to have somewhere to go. its like a river. if too much water tries to pass through at once it overflows. same thing with PCs. the ram can only pass so much electricity, and definitely not 700 watts, in my case. it would overflow, which with PCs would mean the whole damn chip fries and the power stops flowing.Freezer7Pro wrote:

Think of the environment. Turn the bloody thing off.
nope. the human body makes boners in the night. didn't you ever take a health class?Gawwad wrote:

I did but I'm never awake while a sleep and I'm an empiricist so I just disregard any education and am assured that it's the opposite.Ender2309 wrote:

What about 'Hibernate'? It is basically just having the computer automatically turn off...

The wattage may differ when in standby, but it will still pass through the electrical appliance.
