Contrary to popular belief, most systems actually still run at full power even in standby. I recommend shutting the system off entirely at night!

Great for those of us who like listening to music while falling asleep.

edit: What it does: Shuts down your computer after x amount of minutes/hours or at a specific time, and can be used to turn down volume by time.

System standby after, say 2 hours should work. If it fails to work put turn off hard disks to a low amount of time, so you will at least save some electrity.

not really dude. when in standby my fans shut completely off. if my shit was running at full power something would fry. passive cooling won't keep a processor running at idle speeds going strong.

maybe this is true for shitty dells and whatnot, but most higher end PCs would have to cut power to all but ram to stay alive, unless the fans were still running.

I have 2 computers on 24/7, of wich one is a power-hungry 4.2GHz beast. Our power bill is never over 100€/month.

Yes. CPU is basically off, chipset on very low power, graphics card off, hard drives off.

Unless your PSU is complete and utter shit, it won't use as much power.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Falling a sleep should take care of the hard dick after watching TV.

exactly. electricity has to have somewhere to go. its like a river. if too much water tries to pass through at once it overflows. same thing with PCs. the ram can only pass so much electricity, and definitely not 700 watts, in my case. it would overflow, which with PCs would mean the whole damn chip fries and the power stops flowing.

I did but I'm never awake while a sleep and I'm an empiricist so I just disregard any education and am assured that it's the opposite.

What about 'Hibernate'? It is basically just having the computer automatically turn off...

It's a different thing...misread the thread to 'standby'

The wattage may differ when in standby, but it will still pass through the electrical appliance.
