Ok...cant help it, gonna rant for a minute or so...
The topic of: "its a banked oval..." and braking. Look, you gotta brake at each and every oval save maybe Talledega. Even at Daytona, if you have an ill handling race car, you are gonna be on the brakes. At places like Dover (32-34deg banking), or Bristol (36deg banking)...Las Vegas (24 deg)...at some of these places, you are on the brakes so hard, and so often the rotors are glowing like hell, and the fluid is on the verge of boiling. Not braking in an oval my ass...
How many Cup drivers have done well in other series? heheheh
Look at Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Robbie Gordon, Dave Blaney...the list goes on. They have come to NASCAR for 2 reasons. 1. Its by far the most competitive motorsport in the United States. 2. Money, yes cash...that and fame...and who can blame them, if you have the skill and the desire, rock on I say.
As far as F1 goes...its an entire breed of its own, top to bottom, front to back. I do not doubt for one second that a Cup driver could go to F! and fall on his face...no question. But not for long... And I say that about Juan Pablo too, just in reverse. He has come to Cup, learned, and I expect great things from him this year. A talented driver, is a talented driver. I dont care what discipline he comes from.
Now about F1 cars doing 145mph (average...lol) on a track with even *looks around stealthily* CURVES ...
An F1 car only has to manage about 1500lbs wet weight. And from top to bottom, those cars use the air to hold them down. The tires...1 to 2 inches wider on an F1 car than on a Sprint Cup car (yes even though F1 are forced to run on grooved tires, they still have a larger contact patch...more grip) and they are made of a far softer compound than Cup tires.
Again, I dont take anything away from F1, WRC...any of those guys. On the contrary, I have the Utmost respect for them and their skill. But when one educates oneself about NASCAR, it swiftly becomes more than "lets go wide open and turn left all day"
