So my household has been having problems with our internet for awhile, it's starting to be quite the pain in the ass. Somewhat randomly whenever some downloads/uploads are attempted from any computer in the house, nothing can be reached by browser because (I believe?) the DNS server is being overloaded for some reason. All connections that have been made are maintained, for example Teamspeak, AIM, xfire, or when gaming those connections are intact and people can still maintain connection to games or continue online chats, but no website can be reached.

It appears seemingly at random, I was trying to upload a file to youtube and it happened, recently my dad was trying to download CoH patches off file front and it happened, even though I downloaded the same set of patches on my machine and his old machine less than a few months ago, when the problem still was occurring without a problem. To fix it I flip the power on the router, leave it off for a second, turn it back on and allow the computers to renew their ips, and it works until you try the same action again.

Any ideas, or things to consistently try to break it?

ISP: Verizon Fios if anyone has had experiences with that

Sounds like your router is assigning priority to the new downloads you start up. Try changing the config\reading the manual on how to change this.

Sorry if I was unclear, but the download/upload also doesn't work.

You made a good choice asking the forums. Phoning your ISP would result in you talking to an East Indian, spending 20 minutes on hold, and another 20 minutes trying to understand what the hell he is saying.

Sounds all too familiar.  I'm with AOL UK and Indian tech people are the norm, I'm sure they know their shit, but I just can't understand them.  If I'm lucky I'll get through to an Irish person once in a while.

What kind of router do you have? Some low-end residential gateways have horribly sparse resources, to the point of allowing only a couple of active TCP sessions, should these be tracked, or a small handful of PAT table entries.

haha, thx dude!!

Hmmm, have you upgraded the routers firmware yet? Try setting a static ip (reserve in router) and dns (get from isp) on one machine and see what happens...

To me, it looks like your router (going out on a limb, D-Link gaming router, maybe a similar advertising scheme?) is putting priority over all the gaming/messaging apps you're doing. From there, HTTP gets the shit.

Well, you can disable QoS in the router and maybe that will help. However, since my experiences with it have been massive amounts of win, I want to suggest smoothwall.

Essentially an old computer running a simple linux OS (smoothwall) with 2 network cards. One connected to your modem, the other connected to a
switch (and you can convert your current router in to a switch pretty easily) which goes to all the house computers.

It's not exactly Step 1,2,3 but if you're comfortable with computers it shouldn't be a problem.
