GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - The odds are stacked against Valentine’s Day in Hamas-ruled Gaza: The holiday is considered "haram," or forbidden by Islam, most residents don’t have money for frills and the requisite red roses are grown only beyond a closed border with Israel.

Hamas police looked the other way despite the religious taboo, reflecting the Islamic militants’ policy of not going against popular consensus when it comes to social norms.

In Bahrain, which is more open than Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, flower shops imported about 150,000 roses in one week, or 20,000 more than last year, according to the Web site of the Al Arabiya TV station. In Cairo, small cruise boats on the Nile were decorated with red ribbons and hearts made of flashing red bulbs.

Dubai, a conservative Muslim city-state with a modern outlook and a pro-Western attitude, has been taken over by a Valentine craze in recent days. Malls, cafes and even offices were decorated with giant hearts. Five-course dinners and romantic getaways were sold out, and spas offered Valentine specials.

Valentine’s Day was introduced to Gaza about a decade ago by Palestinian exiles returning from more cosmopolitan places such as Beirut and Tunis, following interim peace deals with Israel. The Internet and Arab satellite TV helped spread the idea, mostly among the young, educated and secular.

Yet in Gaza, the holiday of love remains a relatively modest affair, in part because few Gazans can afford to spend on extras, such as candy and flowers.

Across the street at the Rose Flower Shop, two young women, one dressed in a black Islamic robe and head scarf, bought a bouquet of roses, a rare sight in Gaza. The shop had managed to bring in 500 roses from Israel, using Gaza medical patients treated in the Jewish state as "mules," and had about 50 roses left.

Salesman Mohammed Sussi, 30, said he hadn’t received any complaints about his business. "They didn’t tell us anything, whether from the government or anyone else, that it is ’haram’," he said.

Hamas police spokesman Islam Shahwan said Valentine’s Day might go against Gaza’s traditions, but Hamas is not trying to replace civil with Islamic law. "We are by nature a religious people and hate and reject all strange things," he said. "(But) we don’t kill adulterers or gays or cut off the hands of thieves."
Damn these Muslims for their tollerance and adoption of western ways.

Clearly there's no possibility of Islam integrating into western society.

No in their lands because they are adopting the aspects which they like, Which is a good step if they plan to adopt more of them, Such as freedom of speech, Equal rights for all, And the ability to solve problems with words and not guns.

It is not all Muslims, it is the radical asshats that screw it up for them all. Most of them would rather have Western stuff. The average Muslim adult is just like us, except he prays 5 times a day.

You know the funny thing is, when I was in Iraq I never once saw anyone praying at prayer call. You know when that is because the damn speakers on the mosques are blaring, but people are still roaming about doing their thing.

And I am Christian and I don't pray that much.

Some Muslims may want to destroy some aspects of our culture, but as history has proven, western culture can assimilate even the most stubborn of groups.

One look at the average second or third generation American Muslim will show you that their religion easily blends with western culture (assuming you can even tell a Muslim out from the rest of the crowd)

At its core, Islam is nearly identical to Christianity and Judaism, and any Muslim who isn't a total moron (see lowing's news stories for examples of these) knows this, and would have no issue celebrating, or at least being present at, another religion's holidays. (it is all the same god after all).

They don't, and its the best store in town. The stuff they sell is either cheaper than that of their competators (the chains) or is unique, they're the only ones to sell it.

You say Islam advocates destruction because of how they interpret some parts of the Koran but same goes for Christians that take the whole Bible as literal.....

My favourite bit of 'Christian values' is Deuteronomy 7: "thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them", " ye shall destroy their altars... ", etc... I saw a program on a Christian nutter that was using this crap as an argument for killing all non-Christians that refused to convert.

Both religions have nut jobs, and I've seen nothing to show that the majority of Muslims support such things.

Why 1100AD, many of the things accused against Islam were only sorted out in the west in the last few decades. Equal rights for women, minorities, homosexuals (mainly), death sentencing (mainly), religions tolerance is more like a hundred or so years ago, to name a few.

Plus you're using the worst examples of Islamic countries and comparing them to the best examples of western and Christian countries. If you used Columbia as the standard for a Christian country then Christianity has no part in our society. Islam is practiced all over the world in complete harmony with western values.

I do not speak of Islam as a religion, it is a life style and it contributes nothing to the west, which has its base set upon Christian values. You do not have to be Christian to follow them. But ya sure as hell can't be Muslim.

Excellent point, so I say Columbians have no part in our socety either, so they can take their Juan Valdez coffee ground coccaine smugglin' asses back to where they came from as well.

I just believe that the majority of Muslims just want the opposite. The west infringing on thier way of life.

So they dont wanna celebrate Valentines day...so be it. Not like its e end of the world for them. Its thier loss.

Some western values are well accepted in Islam and even deemed beneficial. Unfortunately some frown upon them, believing it to be wrong.
Exactly how some of u expressed yourself on Islamic issues. Goes to show that most of u arent any different, at least on this terms.
We are all humans after all I suppose.

And btw I do celebrate Valentines. Not because of its religious origins but because of the aura of romance of the general populace that day. Just wanna make my lady happy.

But roses cost a bomb that day. Hope she appreciates it.
