3870 or 8800GT

So I was thinking of upgrading my 8600GT for either a 3870 or an 8800GT. My budget is quite tight so I will only be able to get the cheapest of the 8800's. Now I know that half of you will say spend more on the 8800Gt but is it worth it? Especially since all I really play are Source games (which ATI give better performance than nVidia) and FSX.

So what do you guys think?

i think since my 7600 fucked agian n am using a 6200 u should donate your 8600 lol, i would go for the 8800gt meant to be as good as a 8800gtx in some cases.

You have to learn the rules of the game and then you have to play better than anyone else.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I actually chose for a HD3870, as with updated drivers the performance decrease doesnt go over 10%. Usually between 5 - 10% drop with the HD3870 compared to an 8800GT. But the entire rig with the HD3870 saved me 50 euros over a rig with an 8800GT. Plus, Crossfire tends to do better than SLi.

Here you can find test result on HD3870 (WITH UPDATED DRIVERS) vs an 8800GT. You be the judge

This is with the old ATI drivers though, results with newer ATI drivers would probably result in better results for ATI.

If you are going for a single card though, choose for the 8800GT

Ya, I forgot that too. If your not into upgrading any time soon after this that consider that the HD3870 has Dx 10.1 and the 8800GT doesn't have that.

Why would you think for one second that DX10.1 would run on a 3870? DX10 barely runs on it.

DX10.1 is in fact a more stable and improved version of DX10. So DX10.1 would even run better then DX10.

source is being optimized for geforce cards... it is part of the nvidia's 'the way it is ment to be played'-thing. I bet 8800gt runs source better than ATi now... At least in the newer EP2 and TF2.
Also the AA+AF performance of the 8800GT is better than ATi's. Don't get me wrong, the HD 3870 is still great card. just not as fast as the GT.

its not that the geforce cards can't run it, its just that in benchmarks whilst playing source games, it runs better by about 20fps consistently

8800GT. The 8800GT offers superior performance for a little extra cash. A lot of games are shifting over to Nvidia these days as well which means better optimisation.

Companies on the whole haven't made the jump to DX10 yet, what makes you think anyone is going to use an incremental API?
