Will be awhile before I make this purchase, but my current TV is 5 years old and showing its age.  So which is better?

Edit: Please post your reasons ...

LCD. No screen glare.

LCD, imo, has a MUCH sharper screen.  Plasma almost seems to blur a bit, especially when you get into larger televisions.  However, plasma has a faster response rate than most LCD televisions.  If you go LCD, make sure to get a 5ms response time or less.  The one I have is 4ms and it's PERFECT for gaming, sports, and action movies.

LCD is better but more expensive. Especially at the big screen sizes.

LCD is better for brighter rooms too.

All depends on how much you are looking to pay. My girls parents just bought a lcd that cost less then my plasma and it looks like crap.

BTW I have a HP 42" plasma and don't have to worry about glare.

It's funny that you posted this, I was actually in Circuit City and Best Buy today looking at T.V.'s today as I'm looking to upgrade myself.

Plasma:
Less expensive
Better Blacks
Good in dim lit rooms
Great for fast paced action TV or movies
Chance of burn-in
Projected life of 30,000 hours
Subject to glare

LCD:
More expensive
No burn in problem but possibility of dead pixels
Good in well lit rooms
Projected life of 60,000 hours
No Glare
Usually brighter

As mentioned it depends on what you are willing to pay. Generally you get more in an LCD for the price. However some Plasma's are as good if not better in the higher price ranges.

plasma is more expensive for generally the same picture quality. Go LCD or projection.

I paid $1600 for my plasma, and it looks better then most LCDs I have seen.

It has a slightly larger footprint, but I'd take DLP over LCD and plasma.

Plasma tbh ... and Pioneer is the best imo

About burn in: That is as good as gone if you don't buy the cheaper models.

The choice boils down to how much you are going to spend, light conditions, viewing distance, viewing angle and main usage (movies, news, games etc) ...

If you go plasma you need a digital decoder or else you'll get a crappy picture, plasma demands a better quality signal to perform ...

I prefer plasma's tbh.

As Varegg said, get a Pioneer plasma. The new Kuro models are amazing.

LCD = much less power usage than PLASMA. plus the view angle is wider.
PLASMA = often better quality than LCD. and its cheaper I think...

I have a LCD tv... Sharp Aquos.

If you're going for a big TV (anything over 50 inches) with full HD (1080p) and will be using a HD source then plasma is the best.

The black reproduction is best on plasma, as well as less motion blur on sports and stuff.

If you're going smaller and wont be using HD so much then LCD is the best.

If you really want deep blacks and high contrast go with the Samsung's with smart lighting. It controls and turns off individual pixels. Let's see a plasma top 500,000:1.

I generally prefer a plasma for watching a movie, and LCD for everything else.  On balance I would take an LCD over a comparitivly priced plasma though (latest samsungs are fan fecking tastic tv's).

Viewing angle on a LCD is way worse than a plasma!

As i guy i know have knowledge of tech you should know that contrast is close to insignificant if the rest of the specs can't follow up ... and you can never get deep black or the necesary number of shades of grey on a LCD, the very tech behind the LCD doesn't allow it

Your joking right? Since resolutions are so similar now Contrast is one of the primary things to be looking at. Don't believe me? Just go to your local TV retailer and look. You can pick out the ones that have a higher contrast ratio, I absolutely guarantee it. Contrast is what gives a TV it's pop or 3d effect (since the range from the darkest dark to the brightest bright allows for a much better field of depth). With the Samsung it can control each individual pixel. Meaning it can completely turn off a pixel if needed. I doesn't get blacker than that. Pay attention to the specific model I was talking about silly. Don't just lump lcd technology all together. Time to get current, tech guy .

PS: my XBR4 has a viewing angle of 178°. Nearly anything almost short of sitting behind the TV is good.
