So there I was, having a great time on a friday night. We had a couple drinks at a friend's place, went on to a bar near my house and had some more. In the end we went home and slept at my place because it was closer.
My friend hat to get up early the next morning because he had some work to do that day. So we went over to his place, had a coffe, each got into our car and on our way home.
Now on that one kilometer I had to drive back home (all of this was out on the countryside, not in a town btw.) some cops stand by the street and pull over one car after another. Including me. First the usual, "license and registration please". Then he decides he wants to test me on a breathalyzer. 0.008% over the limit. There goes my license for 4 weeks.

The real problem is my work is over 40km away from my home AND I work in field service, so I'm pretty much fucked to the max. The company is probably going to fire me and with a reason like that, it's gonna be near impossible to find another decent job anytime soon.

I never usually drink and drive and that day I really didn't expect I still had a noteworthy amount of alcohol in my blood.
Now I'm wondering, can one single mistake really fuck up your life like that?

Anyone got some similar expericence to share or some sort of advice? Would be much appreciated.

If you are so dependent on your licence because of your job, you should have know better.
You´re over 18 years and should be fully capable of  doing the math about
the amount of alcohol in your blood and when you are sober enough to drive again.
If in doubt, just don´t.
Sorry, no sympathy from here.

Sure, drink and drive if you want. I'll admit, I've done it once...

Just don't get caught
Or crash
Or kill anyone..

I really don't expect any sympathy. I'm usually one of the first to bash drunk drivers and say it's their own fault.
Doing the math isn't quite as easy as you pretend it is though. There wasn't really a way of telling how much alcohol had been in my blood when I went home, which makes it rather hard to estimate how much was left in the morning. I felt really fine and hadn't drunk too much the night before, so I was fairly sure I was within the limit.

What I was hoping for in this thread is someone who has some tips on how to handle a situation like this with the employer or anything else that might be of help, not sympathy.

I understand your point very well and if it wasn't me in this situation, I would probably have said something very similar.

The stupidest part of the story is how cops think its fair to pull you over and search until they find something to charge you with. If you lived in the U.S. i would say its unconstitutional.

They do it here too. If they suspect you of being under the influence they'll pull you over.

Maef, part of me thinks you should be straight-up, tell your boss what happened (hopefully he's an understanding person), say that you had a lapse in judgment, etc.

Just drive without a licence for four weeks. What's the chance of them nailing you twice?

Thing is, whilst the chance of you being pulled over again is almost zero, in the off chance that your employer finds out about it you're doubly screwed; you'll lose your job and potentially go to jail/be banned for longer and pay a huge fine. There must be some way for you to get to work; get a friend to drive you?

Around here it's like this: Saturday night cops set up camp in key streets around the bars area downtown and test nearly everyone. Of course lots of people are way over the limit. So if you're too drunk to speak they take your license. If you're over the limit but you can still communicate they give you 15 minutes to get your act together. That means drink as much water as you can, eat chocolates etc so that the machine will show a smaller reading so as to get the smallest fine possible.

The most dangerous thing in Greece is driving. Roads suck. Drivers suck more.

Shouldn't have driven while drunk, TBH.

Over here its 4 weeks instant loss of lisence + a minimum of 6 more months and a fine once you go to court.  You can get exemptions for work purposes if your livelihood depends on you being able to drive, but its expensive.  It may be worth finding out if Austria has similar laws.

Oddly enough I see a lot of DUI in the news even though in Canada the fines are quite steep.  I often wonder if the DUI cases are rises because of the lack of caring by motorists or the increase of just plain catching drunk drivers.

Either way, there seems to be more DUI cases in the courts these days.

Sorry for your bad luck, I think you are SOL to use another acronym.

If I had it my way, I'd require DUI charges be escalated to "ATTEMPTED VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER."  Die in fire you worthless, selfish, incompetent piece of shit!

Yes, I do feel that way about drunk drivers.  Drunk drivers = child abusers.

It's a cash cow, there is so much money brought in by DUI's.. So in order to bring in the money, they lower the limitations and make it easier. If they had no reason to pull the cars over, they shouldn't be able to charge you with a DUI..

But since there's such a hard no/no stance on it, you're pretty much fucked..

Did you just read the title and get all excited and scroll down to the message field shaking with excitement that you can finally vent some anger?

He woke up the day after. I'll repeat that. The day after drinking. He was stopped for whatever reason and was 8 1000's over the limit...

No, read it.  Still drove drunk (drunk driving = impaired...still able to kill people through gross negligence).  Try losing someone to a drunk driver who "made a mistake" and see how it feels..see if you take any and every opportunity to "vent some anger."

He didn't drunk drive. He was over the limit yes, however by his account he was completely capable of driving. Iie not impared in anyway. Whilst I don't drive myself, I have plenty of friends that do and when they drink the night before, they always have to wait ages into the next day before they can drive despite the fact once they've woken up they're completely stone cold sober.

It's not really the same is it? .008 over the limit after sleeping it off. Not been clubbing and drove around at 60MPH with his mates all swerving over the road.
