If you've got an AGP4X motherboard, it's really, really, really not worth buying a new graphics card for it.

Yes, AGP8X cards work in 4X slots, but it's really, really, really not worth it.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Depends. In most practical instances, I think not.

AGP stuff is sort of backward and forward compatible - but I forget what was compatible with what. One thing I'm sure of is that no graphics cards worth getting will work in AGP 8x, let alone 4x.

No it can't, it's a DX8 card.

Yes, you can put a x8 card in a x4 slot.  I know this first hand because it's what I'm currently doing with a Radeon X1650Pro.

You could actually get a Radeon 3850 for your comp if you wanted to: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi … 000+series

I'd have to recommend this though: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814102073

512MB version of what I have (Mine's 256) and I payed 120$ a year ago for mine.  Unbelievable.

WRONG!

The 8500 is indeed only officially DX8.1 compatible, but it does utilize shader model 1.4, which is the minimum requirement for BF2. The RV200 series are among the few cards to utilize SM1.4 and DX8.1. The SM1.4 never managed to get a grip until SM2.0 and DX9.0 was released.

I know this first-hand, as my laptop currently has a Radeon 9200, which is just an 8500 stripped from a Vertex shader. BF2 runs perfectly fine. BF2 is really a DX8.1 game if needed.

With the rest of your post I agree, but I say again, that it's not worth it. AGP4X hasn't even got enough bandwidth to utilize the full power of a GeForce FX series card.
