No it can't, it's a DX8 card.
WRONG!The 8500 is indeed only officially DX8.1 compatible, but it does utilize shader model 1.4, which is the minimum requirement for BF2. The RV200 series are among the few cards to utilize SM1.4 and DX8.1. The SM1.4 never managed to get a grip until SM2.0 and DX9.0 was released.
I know this first-hand, as my laptop currently has a Radeon 9200, which is just an 8500 stripped from a Vertex shader. BF2 runs perfectly fine. BF2 is really a DX8.1 game if needed.
With the rest of your post I agree, but I say again, that it's not worth it. AGP4X hasn't even got enough bandwidth to utilize the full power of a GeForce FX series card.
