I just got back from the MVA (DMV). I went to go take my learner's permit test. I came back empty handed, not because of failing the law test but because I couldn't even take it. Why? I didn't have one god damned document, my birth certificate (to prove my mother's relation to me, since I'm a minor).

I really see NO drawbacks to a national ID asides from fraud, which can already happen with credit cards and social security cards. It'd be so god damned nice to have a card that has info like my name, date of birth, citizenship status (immigrant if so what kind of visa, permanent resident, US citizen etc), some sort of ID number, blood type, etc. It could also have an RFID chip with tons of info stored on it - birth certificate info, detailed passport and green card info, driver's license info, etc.

Imagine how nice it would be to come back from a trip to, say, France. And you just have the immigrations guy scan your card, make sure everything is right, and be on your way. Or in my case, I go to the MVA and they just scan my card for all the necessary documents. Then when I pass the learner's permit test, they just update the RFID chip with that information.

Make the RFID chip very secure (just use the best damn encryption the NSA has) and I don't see how a National ID card would be much different than carrying around your Social Security card, green card, driver's license, passport, etc.

I support National IDs WITHOUT RFIDs, but with biometric coding instead.  Biometrics are the answer to identity theft.

Hurri, you can get any card but your still going to need those documents (SS card + Birth Certificate)

you could have gotten a state id card, looks just like a license but isnt valid to drive with as soon as you wanted one.

National ID is a fucking waste of taxpayers money, just another scam to justify the fact they think they are doing something for national security when in fact we have more than enough id's as it is.  Case in point. You dont even need a drivers license to get on a plane, if your ticket has already been bought. If you dont believe me, when they ask to see your i'd tell them you lost your wallet. THEY STILL HAVE TO LET YOU FLY. How do I know this? My travel agent messed up my name and they couldnt change the name on the ticket at the counter without transferring me to a different later flight, so i said screw that, she said, "well, people lose their id's all the time, just tell the security agent you dont have an id and theyll pat you down but you can still go through." Skeptical as I always am, i made her guarantee that if i came back i could come to the front of the line.

Worked like a charm

Also, do you know where our Passports are being made right now? as we speak, your national security is being trusted to another country.

Thailand.

Thats right, Thailand.

1.  It costs money.  I don't see a need.  I already have all of the information.  Why should the taxpayers spend money to duplicate efforts?
2.  If someone gets your credit card, they have a few pieces of your information.  If someone got your "National ID" they would have virtually ALL of your information...no thanks.

Still think so?

GunSlingers point is one reason why I will never support a national ID card in the UK - it's one step away from this country becoming a fascist regime - Oh, sorry, it already is a fascist regime.

By consolidating all of the information into one card you would make fraud even easier. There is a reason places require two forms of verification. It makes it tougher for people who have obtained just a little bit of information to hijack your identity. I'd much rather have a secure system of firewalls in place than a single key to my identity.... even if it is not the most convenient plan. Anyone with basic organizational skills is able to maintain a passport, birth certificate, and social security card.

No, keep your birth certificate.  Once you're 15 or 16 you'll have a drivers license.. there's proof of ID for you.  And don't put an RFID chip in it, are you nuts?  You lose it and you're fucked, along with the incredible possibility for abuses.

I think as Americans, and as a world, we've lost touch with what a government should be.  We've been fooled into thinking that we need some vast agency that takes advantage of watches over us.  Do we really need politicians to tell us that we don't like a group of other people that we actually know nothing about?  Do we need politicians to tell us to go kill our fellow man?  It's a downward spiral of ignorance from all sides.  A world without politicians, without big government, without RFID chips is a world much better off imho

RFID blocking wallet.  Gotta love them Faraday cages!

That won't protect against loss but it will prevent remote reading of information.

i don't see the problem with a national ID, provided it's similar to a state ID. in that respect it could make a lot of things easier. it shouldn't incorporate all private data or RFID though.

Yeah, I'd say, if someone is willing to maim or kill you for your identity, then yeah...  you've got much greater concerns than identity theft to worry about.
