Right, i had Vista Ultimate x86 installed to test it out. But after a while i got bored of it and went to reinstall XP (Pro). Now note, before i had Vista i was reinstalling my XP regularly (about every 6 months) - so i know my hardware is compatible. It seems Vista has done something?

But after two days im yet to get through the install process. At first i was having a BSOD with pci.sys, but i managed to fix that by using a windows XP SP2 CD (before i was using SP1).

Now, when i go theough the setup i get to the EULA, press F8 (I Agree), and then choose where to install XP. I get a list of 4 "unrecognised disks", and when i hit enter i get a BSOD with "PAGE FAULT IN  NON PAGED AREA" with refernce to "setupdd.sys.

Everywhere on the net points to bad ram or incorrect drivers. I have 4GB (4x1GB), 2x1GB of which i added since i got the pc - so i removed those. Still not working. Ive also pulled out one of the SATA drives (i have 2 x 250GB SATA drives). Nothing. Ive also downloaded SATA drivers from the Dell (*yuck*) website, and F6'ed them into the install. Still nothing (that gives me a difference BSOD).

Ive also reset the BIOS, removed the BIOS (cmos?) battery and updated to the BIOS. Still nothing.

What do i do?

10 Karma for the winner!

Make sure bios eprom cache is disabled
Could be overheating problem?
Bios to defaults (no overclocking).
Memtest (I know you tried to get them out but still...)

Install another OS, (linux distro), does that work?

Format your HD (long version) (other pc if necessary).

That's all I can think of now, oh maybe badblocks check on the HD with knoppix livecd.

I know what Knoppix is (give me some credit!), just wasnt sure about the badblocks.

But ive managed to sort it now. I changed my SATA mode in the BIOS, and was then able to install. However, first time windows managed to install on I drive (?!) So second time round i disabled my intergrated USB card reader, and voila!

So nice to be back on XP. 34 processes running now, where on Vista i would have had 70+
