I don't know why anyone would rule out talks with Iran to find a peaceful resolution of the matter. If you don't talk to the other guys, how are you gonna reach a solution ? isn't that what diplomacy is for ? Find a peaceful solution for a difficult situation that would otherwise have to be settled militarily ?

Or is the US not even interested in finding a peaceful solution in the first place ? Because that's the impression one might get.

Were I in the fancy $1000 shoes of a US leader, I'd go talk to Iran as well. The price of not doing so outweighs what can be gained. Besides, if people are convinced that Iran is supporting the insurgency and creating WMDs already, what is there to lose?

Parity of esteem. Facilitating the stabilisation of Iraq. Facilitating the stablisation of Afghanistan. Addressing the Palestine problem. Trading oil in euros. Embargoes. Energy policy. Peak oil. Atonement for past altercations (on both sides). Hisb'allah. Nuclear ambitions.

If the US attack Iran before even talking to them then frankly the US will very definitely be the bad guys. That would be just plain ignorant.

PS What did you have to offer the USSR? How does this differ? Both issues centre around ideological differences.

Why does it have to be fair in terms of armaments in that region? Iran has no need to use nukes as a deterrant, reason being the Israeli's have never used nukes in the decades they've had them, even during times when their country was under grave threat. This isn't like Pakistan vs India.

If you want the world to be fair, give nukes to every country and every terrorist group, you know so they have equal firepower to balance it all out and create some stability.
