I dropped the RAID. seemed useless after all.  But I thought about isntalling OS and Apps to two different physical HD's.

btw, it seems neither the Asus P5e X38, nor the gigabyte Ga-X38-DS4 will support 2x2GB RAM AT ALL, at least I could find none on the QVL. Whats the deal with that ?

awesome configuration ! Gigabyte motherboards are great! 2 x2GB should work fine, why should it not? The motherboard supports up to 8GB and there are only 4 memory slots. So 8 x 1GB isn't an option, that automatically leads to 2GB sticks. As far as I know, 2 x 2GB should work just fine .

The QuadGT is still DDR2-based.

its up to you. if you wanna spend the money on DDR3 go for it... its your rig u get to have what you want.

(but if you got DDR2 you could spend the extra money on a decent hooker to "deliver" it for you)

Make sure the mobo supports DDR3, don't just pick components like you did in your first post. Check specs. And if you are going for DDR3 go for the faster ones otherwise the extra money won't be worth it.

among DDR3 RAM for FSB 1333, the OCZ was the one with the best timings I could find.

and have no worries, it will be a while until I have assembled the funds, enough time to check the specs. Might well be that DDR2 is outdated when I have the money.....

Hmm DQ6 certainly is compatible with DDR3 and is a very good mobo but if you are going to change processor's stock cooler you might experience mounting issues-for installing some coolers you will need to remove Gigabyte's chipset cooling solution. As far as DDR3 itself is conerned-the timings on DD# suck compared to DDR2. They are very high but I wouldn't be bothered by them. The memory will OC nicely. You won't notice a bit higher latency compared to DDR2. But go for faster than 1066-thats the slowest DDR3. Something like 1600mhz will do otherwise its not worth the extra money since you can buy DDR2 1066mhz for a lot less money. Make sure your memory suppports EPP (enhanced performance profile) so you will be able to OC you RAM (when you will install your RAm it will probably be set to a lower speed than certified and with EPP you will be able to OC it with ease).
