yeah that ram doesn't work on the abit... it is DDR2 board
damn it, you're right. well, it's the gigabyte or asus board then, with DDR2 RAM.

updated list:

Intel Q9300 CPU - 245,00 €
4GB Corsair DDR2 1066, PC2-8500, CL5-5-5-15, 2.1V, DHX Dominator, 2x2GB - 139,90 €
Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4 Intel X38 - 144,90 €
Asus EAH3870X2/G/HTDI - 339,90 €
2 x Samsung HD252KJ 250GB, 16mb Cache -  91,80 €
Be quiet! 750Watt power supply - 159,90 €
Scythe Orochi/ Scythe Ninja / Thermalright HR-01 plus / Thermalright ultra 120 + some 120mmm fan - yet undecided, around 50 €
Plextor PX-810SA - 69,90 €

total: 1.241,30 €

I dropped the RAID. seemed useless after all.  But I thought about isntalling OS and Apps to two different physical HD's.

btw, it seems neither the Asus P5e X38, nor the gigabyte Ga-X38-DS4 will support 2x2GB RAM AT ALL, at least I could find none on the QVL. Whats the deal with that ?
awesome configuration ! Gigabyte motherboards are great! 2 x2GB should work fine, why should it not? The motherboard supports up to 8GB and there are only 4 memory slots. So 8 x 1GB isn't an option, that automatically leads to 2GB sticks. As far as I know, 2 x 2GB should work just fine .

thanks for all of your opinions, guys.

Now the question remains, DDR2 rig or super-uber DDR3 rig. Since it'll take me a while to assemble the funds, I guess it will likely be the DDR3 rig. yay

The QuadGT is still DDR2-based.

Make sure the mobo supports DDR3, don't just pick components like you did in your first post. Check specs. And if you are going for DDR3 go for the faster ones otherwise the extra money won't be worth it.

its up to you. if you wanna spend the money on DDR3 go for it... its your rig u get to have what you want.

(but if you got DDR2 you could spend the extra money on a decent hooker to "deliver" it for you)

like here ?

intel Q9300 cpu - 245,00 €
Gigabyte GA-EX38T-DQ6 board - 209,90 €
OCZ 4GB DDR3 1333, PC3-10666, CL6-5-5-18, 1.85-1.9V, Reaper HPC Heatpipe, 2x2GB - 389,90 € <--- acceptable timings ?

among DDR3 RAM for FSB 1333, the OCZ was the one with the best timings I could find.

and have no worries, it will be a while until I have assembled the funds, enough time to check the specs. Might well be that DDR2 is outdated when I have the money.....

Hmm DQ6 certainly is compatible with DDR3 and is a very good mobo but if you are going to change processor's stock cooler you might experience mounting issues-for installing some coolers you will need to remove Gigabyte's chipset cooling solution. It has a backplate which is located near (too close) to processor's mounting socket. If you wan't you can read the review of this mobo here: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mainbo … 8-dq6.html

As far as DDR3 itself is conerned-the timings on DD# suck compared to DDR2. They are very high but I wouldn't be bothered by them. The memory will OC nicely. You won't notice a bit higher latency compared to DDR2. But go for faster than 1066-thats the slowest DDR3. Something like 1600mhz will do otherwise its not worth the extra money since you can buy DDR2 1066mhz for a lot less money. Make sure your memory suppports EPP (enhanced performance profile) so you will be able to OC you RAM (when you will install your RAm it will probably be set to a lower speed than certified and with EPP you will be able to OC it with ease).

if I am not going to go with a 1333 FSB board/RAM, would it be advisable to ditch the Q9300, and opt for a Q6600 ? That is only at around 200,00 €, and has 1066 FSB.  I mean, why buy a FSB 1333 CPU if you don't have the board and RAM to support it ?

the alternative would be to go all in and set up a DDR3 rig throughout, for example:

intel Q9300 cpu - 245,00 €
Gigabyte GA-EX38T-DQ6 board - 209,90 €
OCZ 4GB DDR3 1333, PC3-10666, CL6-5-5-18, 1.85-1.9V, Reaper HPC Heatpipe, 2x2GB - 389,90 € <--- acceptable timings ?

that would be a total of 1.556,30 € ( including the other components from above ). Not bad, I'd say, and pretty close to my budget.

But you are saying DDR3 is useless at the moment, as it is not really that much faster than DDR2, and way too expensive ?
DDR3 is crap and overpriced. Go for high spec DDR2 PC8500 or something. You need a 1333MHz mobo to run that CPU, but that doesn't mean you need 1333MHz RAM, especially not gay DDR3 - which is not a good thing to buy, yet.

DDR3 is pointless. Performance gain is virtually non-existent. That money could be much better spent elsewhere (massive SATA2 RAID0 RAMdisks are one of the things I've been most impressed by recently and oh my days they are quick).

looking good. Sure you want RAID1? It will hurt performance. IMO doing backups to another PC/NAS is the much better solution if you don't need 100% uptime. If windows corrupts some data raid1 won't help you at all.

EDIT: oh yeah, ram isn't compatible, not good
How would a hardware RAID1 decrease performance?
