I'm going on a 50km (31 miles) hike next week with my outdoor ed class. It's spread out over 3 days so it shouldn't be too bad.

I was just wondering if anyone else has ever been on an extended camping trip before. Any interesting stories to share?

Yeah, make sure you have comfortable shoes.
Mega blisters if not. (Not personal experience, friend brought stupid shoes.)
That's about it.

No real interesting stories to share, just some advice. If you and the group you are in are competent enough then go seperate from the rest of the group and without supervision (as its just alot more fun). In my duke of edinburgh group so far we've crossed a river in a valley (later found there was a bridge just round the corner, as you do. Climbed down a 15 foot mini cliff then slid down a massive scree pile on our arses and boots and loads of other fun stuff.

Watch out for funny weirdo's as well, we saw a really old guy with a massive handlebar moustache hiking last time, as well as one of our tutours (we met up every few hours) who went running around the entire trail in excercise shorts, a tiny pack and a mobile which had the benny hill theme tune as its ringtone which he deliberately let play for ages.

Oh the biggest pieces of advice are, make sure you have good sturdy, broken in boots that are waterproof as well as good maps, stoves, compass, trowel, toilet paper, waterproofs, a deck of plastic coated cards and the ability to play poker (take matchsticks).

We spent about 7 hours all together playing poker on the last weekend.

Last bit of advice is to never be afraid to take a shortcut if you know where its going.

I tend to go quite a bit with my DoE group and I've got my final gold practice weekend in 2 weeks then a big 5 day hike in scotland in june.

I've been on a 22km hike with two of my buddies. That was fun. It pissed rain the first day but the second day was 24+ degrees celcius with blue sky. "Big Mud" was interesting, we ended up clinging to thorn bushes on the side of the trail to keep from falling in the lake that occupied the middle of the trail. That lasted about 5km right before the end of the trip.

Best part is taking the boots off at the end of the day

The last two trips i went on it pissed it down, so badly one of our routes was changed most of the way through, we had to take a detour to some other place to get a pickup to another camp site. We didn't mind there was a pub at the other place.

This wasn't just rain though this was something else, considering we do all our hikes in the lakes and don't mind getting soaked it was just something else then (full sets of waterproofs didn't fully stop it and your hands and face froze.

I discovered that my hands actually swell up when its that bad, i have large hands anyway so they were huge when they swelled, I couldn't even get my hand into the pack of pringles we had .

I also discovered that i was the only person in our entire group (about 15 of us that day) who could ignore the cold). At the camp site we were forced to stay at when the rain destroyed half a day there were showers, sadly you had to pay a quid to get 4 minutes of hot water. Of course i didn't have any money and nobody else had any change so i just decided to go in anyway even though it was ice cold. (you got water at about 1 degree C for free it seems. Bloody cold but still good, stayed in there for about 5 minutes (lol) getting the mud off from that day.

We were meant to be camping up next to this small lake where there was no actual site or facilities (as usual tbh) so we'd just put up camp anywhere, but the rain was so bad that apparently there wasn't any land that we could camp on that hadn't been swallowed up by the lake.

A site with toilets and showers, no matter how cold was still a nice surprise though.

Oh and don't do what someone in my group did the first weekend and take 17 bottles of beer, 14 broke and everyone stole the last 3.

I can only imagine what you'd do on a canoe trip.

See how long everyone can hold their breathe before they pass out I'm willing to bet. That or you have to make your own canoe from the carcass of a bear you have to wrestle with whilst covered in raw meat.

Well, the pack's almost full and I just checked the weather for tomorrow. 9 degrees Celsius (48 F) with rain Should be interesting. At least Tuesday and Wednesday are cloudy and sunny.

10m Hike a day, seems a good amount.
Terrain?

Take toilet paper, comfortable boots, maintain a pair of Night (DRY) clothing and Wet (DAY) Clothing.
Take a flint and at least 2 lighters.
Enjoy it man, don't be too eager and ensure you don't pull/twist anything.

Terrain is rolling hills (in Frontenac Provincial Park). So far, my Dad's 10 year old hiking boots have been more durable and comfortable than the new one's I bought last year. I'm going to waterproof them in about 10 minutes.

Looking forward to it.

Well enjoy it, also make sure you have waterproof overtrousers, granted you feel and look like a dick and you can be heard from miles away but its still useful.

For the record 9 degrees C in the lake district (where i do my hiking) would be regarded as better than average weather.

Well...I'm back, in one piece, no blisters, tired as fuck, but happy. We had the weirdest weather cycle imaginable; Rain on Monday, Blue skies on Tuesday, Below freezing temperatures Tues night, Wednesday (today) was on and off hail/snow/rain/blue sky.

Sure, I'd do it again. But I prefer canoing
