Imagine going there as seventeen year old (virtually unchaperoned) kid with all of his buddies (soccer team). .. pretty kick ass tbh.

This weekend we plan on going to  Berchtesgaden and the Eagles Nest. Should we just drive it or would we get more out of the trip by taking the train?

Tomorrow we are going to Rothenberg and do some shopping and site seeing....... torture museum or something, I am told.
The Eagles Nest is a common mistake to call it because that doesn't excist anymore ... when taking the bus up on the top of the mountain you only find the Kehlstein Teahouse witch tbh honest is a tourist ripoff if i ever saw it ... with that said the view is spectacular both from Hitlers Teahouse and if you walk up the little crest behind it where the memorial cross stands ... i've been there twice, once when i was 14 and last year.

Also take the trip to Königsee that is nearby ... the color of the water made me speechless and there is also gondola there that will take you up on the highest peek in the area ... around 1800 meters if i remember correctly.

Have you been or do you plan to go to Stuttgart? You really should check it out, particularly downtown. Also recommend the Rhineland...excellent wineries and beautiful rolling hills.

Ok, so when I said Europe I meant the world. No one in the world makes beer like in Europe. I prefer Belgian.

I honestly never EVER though Lowing was this nice a person.

I respect the fact you're allowing yourself to enjoy Europe.

Hopefully you'll get the chance to visit some more of the countries, notably France, Ireland, Greece and Spain.

Nope, totally sober, I am not much of a drinker, unless it is Margaritas I am just floored by what I see. Today ( for those who know the area) we drove from Bad Windsheim to Dachau on the back roads (highway 13).  The drive through the countryside was amazing. Once we got to Dachau, we could not find the concentration camp. I stopped and asked 2 people at 2 different times and no one "understood" what I was asking, even though the spoke English. Is it something the residence wish to forget or are ashamed of?
You might also have stumbled upon the strangely German quirk where a very slight mis-pronunciation means that they have no freaking clue what you're talking about.  I once stood at a bar asking for an apfelsaftshorle for almost 5 minutes with the barmaid looking at me like I'm an idiot, someone behind me in line finally said it slightly different ("...sherrrlah", I was saying it "shore-la") and it was like a light came on in the barmaid's head and she suddenly went into action mixing the juice and mineral water.

Another explanation is that even in Germany, sometimes locals really don't know nearby tourist sites, or they might not have been locals.

Third explanation is that the locals know some places by different names or nicknames, and have no idea what the anglicized spelling/name is.  Though with Dachau I don't think this applies, a big example is Bayern/Bavaria nevertheless.

You could also have run into some NPD sympathizers that wanted to dick with tourists, sometimes happens, especially in east German cities like Leipzig and parts of Berlin.

As for the train, you should try it once just so you can question why you ever need to own a car.  So much nicer getting some place a few hours away just as fast, but being able to kick back and drink a beer and enjoy the scenery, sometimes dirt cheap.  Do they still do that "5 man weekend pass" for 20 euros?  Used to be you could buy a pass for the weekend for you and a few friends good for free rides on all trains and public busses and metros in Germany for something like 20-30 Euros, generally you could get within 100m of point A to point B anywhere in Germany for that.

Ok to update:

First I gotta thank everyone for their advice and heads up. It did prove valuable. I was so impressed with Germany that I sent for my family and they stayed 5 days.

Here is where we went:

Rothenberg: I loved the history, my wife loved the shopping. Go figure.

Dachau: I did this my first weekend. Not at all what I expected. I thought it would be darker. (For the lack of a better adjective)

Nurnberg: Loved it, the castle and cathedrals especially.

Ipsheim: Wine vineyards. Rolling hills and villages as far as you can see.

Nuenswanstein Castle. ehhhhh what can I say, I woulda love it more if there was more history attached to it, but lets face it is only 150 years old. Big deal.

Drove from Bad Windsheim to Berchtesgaden via Fussion to Innsbruck Austria. The drive through the Alps was incredible, and unbelievable.

Konigsee: Took the boat ride to the end of the lake and walked to the Obersee Lake. I can not lie; between Konigsee and Hintersee I have never experienced anything this beautiful in my life.

Hintersee: Took the boys row boating and paddle boating here. Again, some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Nothing in the states can compare these places.

"Eagles Nest": I was impressed with the views from this spot but that is about it. This place is very short on history and the fact that Hitler was hardly even there lessens its worth in my opinion. However, the views overseeing Berchtesgaden, Konigsee etc... is stunning.

Guys forgive my spelling if I misspelled some of these places, I just don't feel like looking up the proper spelling.

I am at the hotel now, my family flew out today and I fly tomorrow. It was an unforgettable trip and I can not wait for my next visit.

I'm glad that you've enjoyed our continent. As Eggie pointed out, the Mediterranean is beautiful, and that you should check it out on the next trip (if and when you make it). The Nordic countries aren't half bad either

I guess its what you are used to. I was equally blown away by the Arizona and Nevada landscape.

I live in one of the Glens of Antrim, Glenshesk, which is one of the most picturesque parts of Ireland. People come to my house and stand going "look at the fuckin view"!, I'm like, meeh, I have been looking at it 30 years. Europe is beautiful, but then again most countries are in their own way.

I have never been to the Rockies but a co-worker that I was traveled here with lived there. I guess Pikes Peak was his backyard or some shit. Anyway, he said the Alps blew the Rockies out of the water. Personally, the views from Lake Konigsee, Obersee and Hintersee was amazing.

Ya know how ya get a postcard and the picture on the post card always seem to be better than actually being there. For the second or third time in my life the postcard picture did not do the live view justice. Maine's rocky costline and lighthouses ( Acadia ), I will have to put Washington State and Mt St Helens and Reiner and the San Juan Islands up there as well as exceptions. Pretty much, however, what I expereinced this past month tops them all.

Did I mention the food, holy shit, I guess a shitty meal in Germany is against the law or something, because I couldn't find one. Except when I at the Pan Americana restaraunt on the outskirts of Dachau. Had a burger there, not that great. figures huh?

I might also add, that although I am not much of a beer drinker, you could have floated a battleship with all of the beer my buddies drank. I personally liked Messa Mix ( cola a orange soda mixed, don't ask me why ) and Juhanessbeer ( spelling ) grape juice tasting stuff. I found it funny that even with me drinking water my tabs were not much lower than my buddies drinking beer. That is probably the only thing that I didn't like

My wife has discovered Sherdian's Coffee Liquer. I will admit that shit is good drinkin' Oh and my boys are fans of Kinder Eggs now.

Yeah, I mean the US has its spots as well, I can say however, with complete honesty, I have never been left in complete amazment and wonder, as I was in the Bavarian and Austrian Alps. Konigsee, Hintersee etc....  I am leaving knowing I just scratched the surface of all there is to see there. The US, well, lets just say when vacation was over, I was ready to get home and get back to work.
