Some communities has the most absurd rules.  I could never live in a place where some local homeowners association can tell me what I can and can't do to my home.  If I wanted that, I might as well rent.

I hope he continues to fight this.

My dad hasn't flown the American flag since Bush got elected, but that's just something I wanna mention.  He's very proud of America, it's stupid they'd make him take down the flag.

I think the law of the state over rides the law of some 'association' (wtf, doesn't he own the home anyway?)

I dont know how its like in America, but here in Austria even an apartment building can agree on a rule that has to be followed by everyone. In my building there are few rules regarding basement access and garbage disposal. These are not State rules, or City rules, but my building rules.

That said its a very very stupid rule to begin with, not allowing a flag to be displayed. But if that rule was in place when he bought the house, or if the vote was held and he didnt vote against it, than he should obey it. He can probably go to the next meeting and request a vote to abolish that rule.

If he owns the house and land, who's to say what he can and can't do (except for the obvious illegal things)

You have much more freedom on your on property then on public or other property. For example, you can drive at any age on your own property(I learned to drive at 13 on my uncles).

That has to be the most uninformative news story I've ever seen...it doesn't even try to explain why they are making him take the flag down.

If it's because it is devaluing the property I guess that would be kind of apt seen as the almighty dollar is what is held above all else in American society!

Usually, I would agree with you, but in this case, the homeowner was required to sign away certain rights when he moved into the neighborhood and bought property.  If he never did sign, then he should be able to keep his flag just the way it is.  This is why I could never own and live in a urban house.

Homeowners' associations can dictate what color you paint your house or if your garden clashes with the rest of the collective's. Stay out of them.

Here's a tip: read the homeowner's association rules before you buy the house.

Sucks, but that's how it works

Drawbacks:
-You can't park your monster truck on your front lawn 24/7
-You can't decide you backyard's best use is to make fertilizer from using the manure from your llama herd
-You can't create a "hamster tube farm" over your house for your 368 cats
-Your front lawn isn't the best place to clean that deer you hit with your car on the way back from drinkin' at "Smokey's Boathouse"

Pros:
-You don't live next to the guy above

Even though it sucks, if the guy asked permission prior to installing the flag, it's possible the association would have approved it, and then he'd have every right to fly any flag he wanted to.

Wow! Racist much? Nobody said a word about it "offending minorities" except you. Did a mean ol' black man scare you once? That means they're all bad, you know.

These disputes are almost always the result of some douche in the HOA who's so worried about their precious property value, they lose all sense of judgement. There's one in every HOA. It's some schmuck who goes to every meeting and cries about something until they have to taken action on it. The guy in the article even mentions he doesn't understand how it affects property value. In the end, they'll either end up fining him and he'll leave it up, or they'll take it to small claims court and he'll win and keep it up.

It depends. Some of them you are, some you aren't. Like he said, read the rules before you buy the house. Personally, I like HOAs. I'm not going to paint my house bright pink or leave a rusted car on blocks in the front yard, so they don't bother me. But they did make the guy down the street start mowing his yard occasionally. And when I say "yard", I mean "dandelion farm". The rest of the neighborhood's grass was being choked out by dandelions because of this tool.

Some neighborhoods require you to join.  You even get to sign a document saying you'll do what the HOA says or you default on ownship.

Sounds bad, but it really isn't designed that way.

In this case, somebody doesn't like the dude & his flag.

And they don't just "take your house"  the first step is they'll just dig out the flagpole and then sue you to get you to pay for the flag-digger-upper fee.  The said thing is you signed a incredibly binding contact in the paperwork when you close on a house.

I've been in a HOA neighborhood before - you notify the HOA to plant a tree.  Or you can choose not to.  If the neighbors complain and you didn't tell them, then you'll just need to pull out your chainsaw and chop the tree down.

I currently am not in a HOA neighboorhood.  On my street there's a guy who never mows his lawn.  Across the street is a house for sale.  I'm guessing because the guy doesn't mow his lawn, the house will sell for thousands less than it should.

as you can see that is not true. HOA can set rules that need to be followed. There are plenty neighbourhoods and buildings with "no pets allowed" rule. You cant have a dog on your own property. But dont get me wrong, I said this no-flag-rule is stupid and pointless. But the rule is in place and follow it and try to legally fight it.

Why do they care?  If he was flying the nazi flag, or a flag showing goatse or a big veiney cock then yeah they might have the right to get annoyed, but thats just fucking ridiculous.

If hes forced to remove it he should watch the complainants like a hawk and find any excuse to give them a taste of their own medicine.

Do you even know what the fuck you are talking about? It's not racist, because there have been several cases of Muslims complaining about people flying the St. George's Flag. So now the Government says it's against the law to fly our own flag on St George's Day, because ethnic minorities like Muslims etc DO get offended.

One of my friends got a visit from the Police because he had a St. George's Flag in his window, as it was the World Cup, and his neighbours (Muslims) complained to the Police and he was told to take it down, yet the had countless flags of their home country in their windows, and lots of religious ornaments all over the front garden.. It's fucking bullsit.

As he said, nobody said anything about offending people in this case.  In fact, based on what we know it's probably fair to assume that it's white Americans wanting it to be removed.

Do you live over here?
No
If you did you'd know that over the recent years, a plethora of incidents where British people have been forced to not show anything patriotic, be it a flag, a scarf with the flag on it etc. This was due to "It might offend ethnic minorities, such as muslims".

And to answer your question, no, "a mean ol' black man" has never scared me.
