Are you required to join these so-called associations? The fuck are they gonna do if I put up a flag? Arrest me?
No, they can just take your house.

Some neighborhoods require you to join. You even get to sign a document saying you'll do what the HOA says or you default on ownship.
Sounds bad, but it really isn't designed that way.
In this case, somebody doesn't like the dude & his flag.
And they don't just "take your house" the first step is they'll just dig out the flagpole and then sue you to get you to pay for the flag-digger-upper fee. The said thing is you signed a incredibly binding contact in the paperwork when you close on a house.
I've been in a HOA neighborhood before - you notify the HOA to plant a tree. Or you can choose not to. If the neighbors complain and you didn't tell them, then you'll just need to pull out your chainsaw and chop the tree down.
I currently am not in a HOA neighboorhood. On my street there's a guy who never mows his lawn. Across the street is a house for sale. I'm guessing because the guy doesn't mow his lawn, the house will sell for thousands less than it should.
