Question:  Have you changed your attitude and playing style since you first started playing?  If so, why?

When I first started playing BF2 last summer, I used to get pwn'd up and down!  I got a little bit better because I joined a clan and I got a chance to play with more knowledgeable players.  However, I was a little unsatisfied with my stats.  Now before anyone goes off and flames me, I don't use my stats to compare myself to others (if I did, I'd cry, because they kinda suck).  Instead, I use them to track whether or not I am improving at this wildly addicting game.

Well, my clan had server problems after SF came out, and we lost a lot of the non-clan players that would regularly show up.  Pretty much, our server is empty almost all of the time.  So, I started to play a lot without any of my clan mates.  I tried to play servers that featured the full rota of maps, but since I don't like to play much in a helo or jet, there are just some maps that I would get coninuously RAPED on!  For some reason, Gulf of Oman, Dragon Valley, and Daqing Oilfields were miserable for me!!  I decided to focus on more infantry-oriented maps because I figured my proficiency with small-arms would improve more by groundpounding than by running around like a chicken with no head on those bigger maps dominated by air power.

Well, I discovered why people like those infantry maps - especially Strike at Karkand.  It is a win-win situation no matter if I am in a good squad, or if I am forced to go it alone or with some newer players.  I discovered the joys of reviving fallen comrades, dropping medic kits, dropping ammo packs, etc.  I realized that I could have a pretty mediocre K/D round (like 12 kills and 18 deaths) but still be contributing and earning points from revives, supplies, flag capture assists, etc.  Also, my k/d in my small arms section has gone up in Assault Rifle from the low .60s to the low .70s.  My light machine gun has gone up from low .60s to high .80s, and it was on that trend since prior to the 1.2 patch.  Also, I've gotten a lot better about tossing grenades and laying AT mines.  I can now lay AT mines without worrying about dopey teammates running over them.

All in all, I am pretty happy, because I feel like (a) I'm getting more points, which is good (since I think the points I get are honest and actually help the team) and (b) My pathetic skills are still pathetic, but much less pathetic than they were a month ago!

So, how have you guys changed your playing styles since you first got the game?  The only bad thing I can think of with regards to my new attitude is that (a) I play Karkand too much (although I have discovered Warlord, and I wish I could find more 24/7 Sharqi servers) and (b) I W/L ratio is worse now than it was when I played a lot with my clan.

When I first got the game, I was just trying to kill as many people as possible, now I cap flags when I can, revive when I can, give ammo when I can, always join a squad with 5/6 people in it and hope they work as a team.

I started out as a spec ops and for the most part had a roughly 1:1 k/d ratio. However, more recently i've become a more tactical player and focused more on being a sniper.
I enjoy the aspect of counter-sniping, while occasionally jumping in a tank and mowing down people is fun. I'd say the best i've gotten out of BF2 is when i've been a sniper, like when I shot every single soldier out of a blackhawk whilst it was flying with an M95... Goodtimes.

I started out playing mostly SpecOps and Medic on Dalian Plant (was my fav. server for a while, still is a nice map that I like) and I sucked at air (helis, jets, anything that flew, I could crash it) and in a tank I got c4ed constantly. I sucked at infantry combat for a while till I started playing other kits. Once I started playing AT (with the DAO) and Support I was getting better. Once I saw the weapon profiles on BF2S I realized how accurate guns are proned, zoomed, etc and such to get maximum accuracy and get more kills. When I started out, my K/D as infantry was about .5 - .6, but now its mid 80.s with most guns (not including pistols, knife, defib, etc) and almost 1.0 with the LMGs. My overall K/D has gone from .6 to 1.20 In tanks, I've become really good at owning other tanks and avoiding / killing AT and staying repaired, as well as moving so as not to get c4ed, so my ratio is up to 4.11. I have also learned to fly jets and helos, although I'm not the best helo pilot I get the job done, and I'm an uber helo gunner.

Karkand, Sharqui, and Mashtuur helped me improve my playing alot because at first jets kept owning me but once I got away from them I improved overall and so now can compete with them in the air or on the ground. I feel really good about my stats and I think I'm a better player than many around my level; I still get owned of course, but my K/D is steadily rising.

My problems: Karkand Whore (trying to change, but I just love the infantry and squad combat); Used to bunnyhop (my new clan doesn't allow that so I no longer do it)

LOVE claymores, AT mines, and C4, even if i don't have the expert badge.

I started out as a medic as I was rambo medic in Enemy Territory.  I shied away from assault for a long time as I always wanted to be a team player and absolutely love using grenades (I really loved using rifle grenades in Enemy Territory).  Now I use the kit that is most needed for the situation.  If another kit is needed, I pick up a dead person's kit, especially if a medic falls I will switch and revive most of a squad if possible.

I then started using armoured vehicles and do pretty well in them.  Then I slowly started getting in attack choppers as a gunner only and got really good using the main gun and especially the TV missile which is key to being a great gunner.  From there, I went on to flying a jet, which I crashed so often that I was deterred from ever flying again until I decided to buy a joystick.  Now I am decent aviator, and got really good at dogfighting and downing planes and helicopters alike with only the vulcan cannons.  Alas, that era has passed and non-dogfighting reigns.  It is only a challenge when being chased by a jet, but actually shooting down a jet is a bore.

But aside from that, the graphs from this site have really helped me show what I need to concentrate on to improve my gameplay.  With the increased accuracy of the small firearms, I have increased my kill to death ratio steadily towards a positive number.

What also helped me immensely with my infantry tactics was Special Forces.  That game really changed my view on how I should play.  I then transferred that experience and knowledge back to regular BF2 which I now play regularly as I have performance issues with the expansion pack after the patch and I also like BF2 better anyways.

My advice to you would be to stick with a good squad, or even frequent a clan server a lot and they will get to know you.  If you score well they will allow you on their team more often and go out of their way to get you on their team in some instances.  Also try to be proficient in using the vehicles as they are an essential part of the game. Use cover to your advantage, use all your weapons when the opportunity arises (knife kills, pistol for long range combat when you have a short ranged main weapon).  Join a squad and pick a kit that isn't being utilized by the other squad members so you can round out your squad better and be better prepared for combat.  Try to learn your enemy's patterns.  For instance, in Karkand the enemy tries to take the Suburb which is a great CP to launch further strikes from as it is higher ground and easily defended by two or three people if they are placed properly.

Essentially, try to be proficient with every kit, every weapon (because you don't know what main weapon you are picking up when you switch bags), every vehicle, know their strengths and weaknesses.  You can read the Wiki and UBAR reference guides on this site to give you awesome information on all these things.

In the Demo (which I played from release to December... ) I played only Anti-Tank (And I OWNED).
Then I bought the game and played Spec-Ops (And I SUCKED BALLS).
But now I've finally settled on Medic mostly. Sweet Jesus that class is to easy to get points with. The map hardly matters. People bunch up and get shot and blown up and I just come to the rescue with med-packs and revives.

But now I am discovering the joys of Commander (and no, I don't suck to badly at commanding. Assuming my Squads pay attention to my orders, we win generally).
