Looking for a quiet CPU cooler

Yeah, so I got the Zalman 9700LED - it works great temperature wise, but it's not exactly quiet. I was stupid enough to get the LED version instead of the NT version, but they only had the LED version in stock. Therefore, in order to change the fan speed, I have to use a fan controller to adjust it, meaning I have to keep an eye on the temperatures when I do so - kinda annoying.

Also, the fan is a bitch to change out to something more quiet, and 4-pin, so I'm kinda interested in those big heatsinks where you attach 120mm fans to them.

I was looking at the Scythe Ninja, but the idiots used that amazingly stupid Intel stock fan fastening technique - I've already broken the stock heatsink attempting to use that correctly.

So my eyes have landed on a Thermalright Ultra-120, with a Noctua NF-S12-1200 pushing air in at the front, and another Noctua NF-S12-1200 working as a case exhaust fan (about 7cm away from the cooler).

Is that a good plan? Are there any better alternatives? I'd prefer the air to go front to back, as that is how my airflow is going atm, so no Gemini.

Sounds pretty good, just make sure your case can fit it.

Also, why not connect the 9700 to the mobo, and use either the BIOS fan controller for auto speeds, or SpeedFan?

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. It's only 3-pin, so I can't do that.

At least according to what I read, you need the 4-pin version (NT) in order to make your mobo controll the speeds according to the CPU heat. I've tried setting "Adjust CPU fan to CPU temp" in the BIOS to enabled, but it's constantly at 2200 RPM...

Then you're doing it wrong. Try with SpeedFan. SpeedFan is controlling my media PC's 3-pin fan, and connector according to CPU temp. You might also try finding and changing the temp it's trying to maintain. If it's set to 30, of course it's on 100%.

that's the problem - none of the speeds change my CPU fan speed.

How can you think a 9700 is loud? I have the 9500, which has a smaller fan (usually smaller fan=louder) and mine is super quiet...

Another thing you can try is go to Configure > Advanced > Select the first drop down item, it should give you a list of stuff > Change the PWM Modes all to "Software Controlled".

yeah, I'm working on getting a quiet system now.

Unplugged the intake fan because it wasn't doing much and replacing the exhaust fan with a Noctua so it can help the 9700 (thus letting the 9700 run at a lower speed, thus making it quiet).

Forgot what they call em, but yeah, it's like $50 you give it 5V and it'll freeze ur CPU. Did I mention it's silent?

I think he's means a Peltier (or TEC as it's also known) cooler and they really aren't all that great, and they're about £250.

Just buy the ultra-120 extreme and run it with no fan, you'll be fine with anything up to 3.5Ghz.

I saw an Instructible on hacking a peltier out of cooler to make a single bootle coke cooler.
And someone in the comments mentioned cooling CPU's with em

I never knew they were $400 tho, you could prolly make one for $50 with a peltier from eBay and your old heatsink

with the low efficiency of TECs you'll not only need the expensive TEC, but also a good water cooling setup. A normal HSF will be way underpowered
