"people in ny have a general idea of how to drive. one of the pedals goes forward the other one prevents you from dying"
Well maybe I'll buy a $60 PSU or something, then get a card in a few years.
I got my antec PSU I think it is 650W for like $60
Aftermarket doesn't always necessarily mean good quality. There are some bad brands of PSU you can buy and you have to know which ones are the good ones.Ryan wrote:
But how come other dudes are running theirs just fine at 300, even 250? They said they have had the card for several months, no problems.NooBesT wrote:

It came with the computer, it just says it's an ATX 300 Watt Power Supply.
edit: well on tigerdirect.ca, they have 400W PSU's for like $30-50. That's not too bad, and they are aftermarket, so they are good quality.

I'm aware of the correlation, I'm just saying many people mistake "is this wattage enough" when in reality, the amperage matters just as much - if not more
Indeed, you are of course correct (I would have picked you up on it, otherwise! ) - amperage is much more important than wattage - but wattage is also very important.
My rule of thumb when giving advice on buying a PSU is:
(of course, that is just a 'rule of thumb' and mileage can vary, so do your research before buying)Scorpion0x17 wrote:
Add at least 10% to any calculated wattage requirements, buy a decent named-brand PSU, avoid cheap no-name brands and NEVER buy a re-badge.
I just got a 500W Basiq for $30.Sup wrote:

Those "calculated wattages" are just PR ratings, nowdays. I've got a 550w here with 19A on +12V, and a 300w with 36A on +12VScorpion0x17 wrote:

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
