It is bad for the environment.
Good news, it can be fixed.

lol....

add making movies and flying private jets to that list.  Also include being friends with celebs who some of which use almost triple the water a normal person uses.
that's exactly right and i posted a link earlier showing these people's extravagant lives - yet these same people are the ones telling YOU how to live.  hypocracy.

further, only lotta_drool and i here have been ones supporting reducing the number of humans on the planet as a way to help curb global warming.  why is that suggestion ignored (and loudly so)?  hippies love free love i guess.

Hey now.  I suggested a while back leveling Africa and turning it into one giant wind farm.

Use the Sahara as a giant solar power plant too

You can do that today, it's not like anyone lives there

holy crap!

list of countries by growth rate:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co … rowth_rate

it's like a belt around the middle of the planet where huge birth rates are more prevalent.  is this due to the weather?  hot august nights?

on a side note:  given enough time, it looks like the palestinians will outnumber the jews in Israel given their birth rate.  that should make some on this board very happy.

we in the US are 300M.  china tops 1B and so does India.  What are china and India doing to contribute to reduction in greenhouse gasses?  can we role model based on their responsible behavior?
That has to be a joke - "Well they aren't doing anything, so why should we?"

Also, yes, around the Equator, poverty rates are on average higher (weather & climate factor into this rather a lot)

More poverty=less education=more births

There are other factors, but that's a big one.

At the time, it would have been political suicide for the US to sign (i think)

I heard there was encouraging signs of movement towards this recently though

same can be said for the other side of the coin - that is, if we ARE doing something, then why should they?

that was my point.

what vested interest does china have in doing anything other than what is best for china?  tell me, i'm all ears.

The other side of the coin shouldn't matter - This isn't a "either we all do it, or none of us do" thing, It's in everyones best interests to preserve this planet.

Additionally there are reports that many of the countries that have ratified the treaty are not even holding up their end of the bargin and their taxpayers have to foot the bill for the fines.

http://petesplace-peter.blogspot.com/20 … n-owe.html

japan itself (kyoto is in japan of course) is truly modeling responsible behavior under its own protocol.  Ireland was given an exemption so that it can actually produce more greenhouse gasses.  how did you guys get such a sweet deal?

so then you'll be having this same conversation with china in 20 years when they surpass the US in terms of emissions?  how much of an impact do you think they would have made on the planet by then?  every week china builds a new coal fired power plant.  i hear they are consuming huge quantities of cement to build hydro dams and other things.

http://www.theoildrum.com/story/2006/1/29/23825/7257

point of the link is to show that china consumes >30% of the cement in the world.  cement itself produces CO2 by chemical reaction - plus it has to be trucked in (more pollution).  this is just one thing though.  i maintain that the 'rate' of increase is concerning.

but, they get a free pass.  this does nothing to win the hearts and minds of Sally homemaker or Bob the mechanic.  You have to do much better sell job.

It's like i said, be happy knowing you've done your bit - I have no doubt China will come around as they become more Westernised.

Also, quite a bit of the emissions in China are a direct result of us outsourcing manufacture there.

Fixed. The US companies outsourcing their manufacturing to China aren't responsible for China's environmental policies (or lack thereof).

i hope you are right about china.  i have my doubts is all.

ironically you mention 'once they become more westernized'.   this is kind of funny point since many people on this board despise US interference and meddling.  i hope that the chinese populace won't view this particular issue in that light.

Ahh, becoming more Westernised is not an US caused problem, as the populace becomes more educated and so on, they tend to strive towards Western ways of life, fashions, activities etc. The same was visible in Japan in the 1860's

i agree.

also the chinese can feel free not to manufacture those goods at cut-rate prices - hence the drive to outsource in the first place.

now then, let's suppose the chinese start obeying these protocols, the price of doing business will go up.  could this trigger some companies to rethink their outsourcing and bring those jobs back home?

Indeed it could, though the effects of such a move would be pretty unpredictable.

One example (US), the manufacturing industry increases, and so does GDP.

Another, (World in general) we simply find another country (most likely somewhere in Africa) to exploit.

Works in some parts, to some extent (SA being one example), but yep religion is a big limiting factor over there.

However, religion was (and still can be) a a limiting lifestyle factor in the "Western World", i.e. Northern Ireland.
