that's exactly right and i posted a link earlier showing these people's extravagant lives - yet these same people are the ones telling YOU how to live. hypocracy.usmarine2 wrote:

add making movies and flying private jets to that list. Also include being friends with celebs who some of which use almost triple the water a normal person uses.
Hey now. I suggested a while back leveling Africa and turning it into one giant wind farm.CaptainSpaulding71 wrote:

You can do that today, it's not like anyone lives there

That has to be a joke - "Well they aren't doing anything, so why should we?"CaptainSpaulding71 wrote:

I'm sorry but are you serious?! That has got to be the most ignorant argument I've ever heard...believe it or not Naight we're not the only species that inhabit this planet and what you're saying is utterly selfish.
Ever heard of sustained development?
Also, yes, around the Equator, poverty rates are on average higher (weather & climate factor into this rather a lot)CaptainSpaulding71 wrote:

it's like a belt around the middle of the planet where huge birth rates are more prevalent. is this due to the weather? hot august nights?

At the time, it would have been political suicide for the US to sign (i think)CameronPoe wrote:

same can be said for the other side of the coin - that is, if we ARE doing something, then why should they?FatherTed wrote:

Pathetic reasoning.
The other side of the coin shouldn't matter - This isn't a "either we all do it, or none of us do" thing, It's in everyones best interests to preserve this planet.CaptainSpaulding71 wrote:

that was my point.
what vested interest does china have in doing anything other than what is best for china? tell me, i'm all ears.
so then you'll be having this same conversation with china in 20 years when they surpass the US in terms of emissions? how much of an impact do you think they would have made on the planet by then? every week china builds a new coal fired power plant. i hear they are consuming huge quantities of cement to build hydro dams and other things.FatherTed wrote:

It's like i said, be happy knowing you've done your bit - I have no doubt China will come around as they become more Westernised.CaptainSpaulding71 wrote:

point of the link is to show that china consumes >30% of the cement in the world. cement itself produces CO2 by chemical reaction - plus it has to be trucked in (more pollution). this is just one thing though. i maintain that the 'rate' of increase is concerning.
but, they get a free pass. this does nothing to win the hearts and minds of Sally homemaker or Bob the mechanic. You have to do much better sell job.
Fixed. The US companies outsourcing their manufacturing to China aren't responsible for China's environmental policies (or lack thereof).FatherTed wrote:

Ahh, becoming more Westernised is not an US caused problem, as the populace becomes more educated and so on, they tend to strive towards Western ways of life, fashions, activities etc. The same was visible in Japan in the 1860'sCaptainSpaulding71 wrote:

ironically you mention 'once they become more westernized'. this is kind of funny point since many people on this board despise US interference and meddling. i hope that the chinese populace won't view this particular issue in that light.
ps: i ran out of karma - i'll get you later.

Indeed it could, though the effects of such a move would be pretty unpredictable.CaptainSpaulding71 wrote:

also the chinese can feel free not to manufacture those goods at cut-rate prices - hence the drive to outsource in the first place.
now then, let's suppose the chinese start obeying these protocols, the price of doing business will go up. could this trigger some companies to rethink their outsourcing and bring those jobs back home?
and in the middle east...there's that bit of conservative islamic values holding them back from these same ideals.FatherTed wrote:

Works in some parts, to some extent (SA being one example), but yep religion is a big limiting factor over there.CaptainSpaulding71 wrote:
