I have a couple of questions maybe someone could answer them please:
On the server browser, it shows I have, say 20 ping on different servers, but some have a bar on the left showing different colours, most german servers are green, most french are orange, and most in general are red- but when I join, I don't see any difference in connection or anything (I wouldn't lag on a server with a red bar, or a green one) I've asked lots of people in game and no one seems to know so I'm just curious as to what it means.
2nd question if anyone knows: does router firmware affect ping? If so why? I am using a Linksys WRT54G (v4) and was using DD-WRT firmware (the previous version to today's) and it was running fine, on any server in BF2 that I joined (that showed a ping below 100 on the server browser) I would guarantee a maximum of 40 ping in-game, usually 20-30 ping is what I would get. I looked on the DD-WRT site and found a newer edition of the firmware I was using so I installed it (correctly) as obviously if a newer version is out I wanted to see if there were any new features, but now, with it installed I get the same ping (about 20-40 in all games that I choose) but now it spikes up to about 300 quite often for about 30 seconds, then calms back down to the 30ish that I normally get. I am asking this in case anyone knows, as none of the settings in my router seem different to the previous firmware version, I didn't know if any options affected the ping (I thought it was just your internet connection) I haven't gone back to using the old version yet, as it takes me a lot of time to re-install, and go through the setup again, and for all I know, I could still have the same problem, so if anyone knows a possible reason to why the ping is randomly jumping up to about 300 in every server I join I would like to know:)
1 more (lol): My pc specs are-
Athlon 64 3000+ oc'd to 2.5GHz
MSI 8600GT oc'd- 693 core (linked to shaders) and 900 (1800) memory
Raptor 74GB
2GB random manufactuer cheap ram
400W PSU
Regardless of what settings I use, lowest or higest (I am using everything high, 2x AA, but dynamic shadows and dynamic light are set to low)
I get roughly 80-100 fps on any map, pretty much 100 on Karkand, at least 80 on Dragon Valley, Fu She Pass etc but even though these are good framerates especially for my spec pc, I get a lot of stuttering when I enter a new area of a map e.g. if I am on Dragon Valley and take off in a chopper from the US Carrier, it would freeze for about 2 seconds when I get to Temple for example (enough for a possible crash) then go smoothly again, but once I have flown the whole map, the whole lot goes smoothly for the rest of the game- I didn't know wether it's my CPU (I know the GPU isn't the best) but the CPU is definately showing it's age, or my RAM?
The weird thing is, I am currently using Vsync now, and forcing triple buffering using Rivatuner's D3D overrider, and everything is buttery smooth without any of the lock ups, but my problem wasn't tearing? I did get tearing when I was to fly a jet, an that has gone, but vsync seems to have solved the lock ups as well (which I didn't think it was supposed to do) you are probably wondering why I am asking this then, it is because when vsync and triple buffering is enabled (75hz refresh rate) I get very bad mouse lag, but super smooth gameplay (75fps all the time)- so they are as bad as each other really. I have tried in the control panel setting the max pre rendered frames from 3 to 1, and it has helped a great deal (I read to avoid setting it to 0) but I still sometimes get it. I am just trying to find an answer because surely not EVERY BF2 player either has to put up with tearing/stuttering, or mouse lag? Or do they? lol sorry I really am not that good at explaining things but if anyone can help on any of my questions I'd be grateful, sorry for a long(ish) post but thanks again for any replies:)
