My friend is in the market for a new computer.

Budget: $AU1500 (which probably means about $1200US)
But that budget needs to include the box, screen, keyboard and mouse.

He wont be upgrading, so no need for DDR3 motherboards etc.

Uses: casual gaming, so nothing great but still good enough to run most things with no lag.
Music recording and editing (and burning).

So what parts would you guys recommend?

This is taken directly from another thread. Yes, links are to an nl page, yes, it's in €, but that system should be doable for about 1200AUD, and will do everything he wants.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Why always those slow rams? The 1066MHz aren't much more expensive.
Edit: actually I payed half of the price of your, slower rams. 2GB only. So higher frequency and same cost. And mines have a micron D9 chip.

CPU: Any reason for the 7200? For the extra $50 do you think the 8400 is worth it?
Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 - $143.00
Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 - $179.00
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - $199.00

Graphics card: Why the ATI over Nvidia? I thought Nvidia were better in that range, so which one would you say is better?
(ATI) 4850 512MB Gigabyte - $231.00
(nV) 8800GT 512MB Gigabyte - $231.00

PSU: is the 620 worth it for $9?
Corsair HX-620 - $149.00
Corsair HX-520- $140.00

Motherboard:
I can't find that exact board, but have been looking between the Gigabyte DS3's and the ASUS P5K's, do you have any opinion on either? Depending on the model they range from about $100-$200.

HDD:
I don't think he needs 1TB hard disk, I believe he's using a 40 or 60GB one just fine atm. So I think I'd save $100 and get a 500GB one.
1TB (1000GB) 32MB Samsung - $189.00
500GB 32MB Seagate - $92.00

RAM: Out of these which do you think is the best value for money? Is Corsair any better then Geil?
4GB Kit (2x2048MB) PC6400 800MHz Corsair  5-5-5-18 - $132.00

4GB Kit (2x 2048MB) PC8500 1066MHz GeiL Ultra 5-5-5-15 - $198.00

Case: What's the advantage of the 182?
Antec 900: $154.00
Antec 180: $143.00
Antec 182: $192.00

From what I understand (And I may be completely wrong), but DDR2 1066 ram is just overclocked 800, and is still about 50% more expensive.

Ultra ram from Corsair PC8500; http://geizhals.at/eu/a215280.html 46€

Btw you can OC PC8500 too you know, to much higher speeds than PC6400 is capable of going.

1066 RAM is really a waste, unless you're running 2132MHz FSB. For an 1333MHz FSB CPU, DDR667 wouldn't technically present any real bottleneck. DDR800 is good up to FSB1600, and it can yet be overclocked.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 - $179.00
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - $199.00

The E7200 has the best price/performance right now. It can easily (As in stock volts) be overclocked to 3GHz, and for a majority of apps, 6MB L2 has absolutely no benefits over 3MB.

Graphics card: Why the ATI over Nvidia? I thought Nvidia were better in that range, so which one would you say is better?
(ATI) 4850 512MB Gigabyte - $231.00
(nV) 8800GT 512MB Gigabyte - $231.00

ATI. The 4850 is about as fast as a 9800GTX.

PSU: is the 620 worth it for $9?
Corsair HX-620 - $149.00
Corsair HX-520- $140.00

They're essentially the same PSU, you're just paying for a higher rating.

Motherboard:
I can't find that exact board, but have been looking between the Gigabyte DS3's and the ASUS P5K's, do you have any opinion on either? Depending on the model they range from about $100-$200.

The GA-P35-DS3 is a really good board, too. I have it, and love it.

4GB Kit (2x 2048MB) PC8500 1066MHz GeiL Ultra 5-5-5-15 - $198.00

Whichever of the PC6400s that the budget allows for.

Case: What's the advantage of the 182?
Antec 900: $154.00
Antec 180: $143.00
Antec 182: $192.00

Take the P180. It's got a lot better value in this case (LOL PUN).

Proper 800MHz ram is still cheaper than cheap 1066MHz.

And by changing the RAM:FSB ratio, 4.6 is as achievable as well.

Anyways the point is that 800MHz RAM is not all that bad for the most of us.
