So I decided to keep vista 64 bit, turned off UAC, Ran BF2 as Admin and Compatibility mode (XP) and it still doesn't work.  My Laptop Specs are: T9300 2.5 ghz, 4gb DDR2, Vista 64 bit home premium, 512mb nVidia gforce 8600M

Are there drivers I need to install?  I put DX 9 on because DX10 didn't seem to work, but that didn't fix it.  Any Ideas? BTW, Halo 2 and Rainbow 6 Las Vegas 2 both work fine, BF2 and BF2142 don't.

What doesn't work?

Does it not install, not launch? etc.?

Like many modern laptops, the monitor outputs 59hz. BF2 can't run at 59hz. Only 60hz and above.

So, you can plug in an external monitor, or see if you can adjust your laptop's monitor refresh rate.

Can't you force it to run 59Hz? Or not run it fullscreen?

The game acts like it will start, screen goes blank, flashes, then goes back to my Vista screen.  I will try the external monitor and get back to you, but I won't know for a few hours. Even with the video card your saying I cannot change the refresh rate?  That sucks!  Thanks for the replies.

Nope, tried both to no avail. Scoured the Net, no solution but hooking up an external monitor. The game will not run at 59hz at all, EA said it themselves. Running it in windowed mode gives the error message about the video settings.

And nvidia got rid of forcing refresh rates in the Vista Control Panel. So the only solution is external monitor.

However, once in game, you can unplug the external monitor and it will force the game on your laptop monitor. You can play fine, but the resolution will be whacked if the two monitors are different. From there, you can go portable with the laptop. But if you lose the game, be it CTD, Quit or low battery, you'll have to plug in the external monitor.

BF2 can be a real bugger at times. Even if they don't adjust the refresh rate limit in the 1.5 patch, they should definitely have us mobile gamers in Battlefield 3 with 59hz. A laptop's meant to be mobile, and bringing an extra monitor just for the game sounds like a pain.

^Did you pirate the game?  If you did, shame on you, go hit your head against the wall a few times, and then buy a legit copy.

If not, make sure you entered it all exactly the same as your manual said, and try reinstalling everything (look for the install order guides).

Had that problem. I had to uninstall and reinstall. Worked fine for vanilla and boosters. BF2 can be a bugger at times. If I register my game, I would hope it works. Be sure to register by the way if it's your own copy, can't tell ya how many people lose their manual.

I thought that if it was your refresh rate that you could manually enter it in one of the usersetting type files to exactly what yours is, I'm not sure if it makes BF2 start up as that rate or if it's when you log in- I'm running mine on Vista 64 fine but at 75hz all I did was make punkbuster run as admin and BF2.exe run as admin I've never had to run anything as XP compatability. Another thing I've heard is that BF2 starts in 800x600 I'm pretty sure you're monitor can display that but it's best to check anyway.
I think the refresh rate thing is in the my documents profiles video.con and you can manually change the resolution and refresh rate try 58hz or something it might work might not

Not a pirated copy, sorry to dissapoint.  I have the manual and had to input the key before it would even install, so looks like I'll have to try re-installing it.  COD 4 seems to be working fine with the 59hz refresh rate.  I tried to force the laptop to run with BF2 (disconnected external monitor during play) , but it didn't.  If someone can figure out how to manually change the refresh rate on a laptop let me know.  I tried everything I know (doesn't mean much) and I couldn't change it.
