OK.  I have a dell xps, loaded out -4 gigs ram, Pent D, Nvidia 8800 GTOC, ect...

1. Yea its a dell, I fucked up and paid about 3 times what its worth
2. Hard drive is going bonkers.  System couldn't even find it the other day
-Major load times on anything (just clicking on 'my computer')
-Bad installs on just about every new product (multiple installs)
-Has had xp/vista put on it back and forth about 6 times (each time a complete wipe)
-Currently when trying to install SH4 75% of icons were changed to "SH4" (won't switch back even when manually done)
3. Its a 32 bit system
4. Dell's customer service sucks Indian ass.

Should I merely change the HD out?
         or
What do you guys think of this?
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications … =V133-8701

if not, what changes would you make to it?  If upgrading, I think I'll just keep the monitor I have....

OR

Stay away from Tiger? Then what do you reccomend?  I'm trying to stay under or at 2k

THANKS!

Change the drive out, RMA the old one to the manufacturer (fuck Dell).

you can build your own with even better parts than the tigerdirect comp...  And i would recommend the intel duo core or quadcore instead of the AMD proc...(not a fanboy of intel but they are the best right now)...  If you wan't i(or others in here) can price out a killer comp for under 2k easily

Your Dell comp could have a bad memory stick... with some of those symptoms or even a bad Power supply... amongst other possibilities

some guidelines for builds... 1000 or less and 2000 or less

You could try putting in another HDD, it wouldn't hurt and it would be cheap to do. But if you want to get a new system, don't get that overpriced PC you linked to.

Building your own would be the best, but if you don't want to go that route, take a look at http://ibuypower.com/mall/lobby.htm . You can use their configurator to put together a machine that has what you want.

For example

Yea.  When I got home from work, I did the f12 on boot, ran the hard drive diagnostic.  And....

Drive D:ST350641as - Fail Return code:7

My hard drive fails...

Well, I've got to back some files up.  I'm also seriously considering building one now.

Build one yourself: It's cheaper, you get better components and you'll learn how to build a computer wich you can use to help out friends/family out later on.

TRUST ME, having the ability to build computers is not as great a thing as you would think.  I get calls all the time from family members because I am the resident "geek" so they figure they can call me with whatever computer related question they want.  I don't mind helping people out but the people in my family bug me way too much.

All of us in the tech section here know about this.

@ OP If you want to build, you could keep that GT, and get another to SLI. Nehalem is coming out in 6+ months, but I doubt you'd want to wait that long. (Like me) Grab an E8400, 4 gigs of ram, and you'd be set. You could either sell that GT, and get a 48xx series, or sli em. 780i if you are planning on sli, X38 if you aren't.

And for the love of gawd, buy from Newegg, not Tiger direct. Newegg has the best prices, service, selection etc. (I've probably spent close to $2k there and have yet to have a problem) There's really no reason to go anywhere else if you live in the US.

The Killer online gaming accelerator is a waste of money in my opinion. I think most of us just run off the motherboard network connection, and it works fine for gaming.

KillerNIC is way overpriced. For 5% better connection you pay 200€.

Killernic is bullshit.
That PSU is a bit overkill I think. And the parts you trew together are more like almost 3k than around 2k . Here are some parts I selected, I ditched the core 2 extreme, it's a huge waste of money: $500 extra for 0.167 ghz more. The Q9550 has a much better price/performance ratio and runs @ 2.83 Ghz. You can choose your own CPU cooler, fancontrollers and other "extras".

I'm sure you could make that even cheaper by just swapping the 8800GT you have now into that, an not buy a new video card, since that will last you a while.  Also, you could do the same with the DVD drives

yes he can use the dvd drives. Or he could sell his whole dell pc? 8800GT is nothing compared to an GTX280, let alone SLI GTX280. If this man wants an awesome PC for more than 2k, then why not go all out? He should buy all the latest shit out on the market, and not use the "old"components.

That case doesn't look to have the best cooling. If you're going to get 2 GTX 280s then get the "Nzxt Tempest Gaming Tower Case w/420W Power Supply   Black "

Out of the available cases that one seems to have the best airflow potential.

EDIT: Holy shit, did you just go through that list and select everything that was top of the line?! That PC is going to come out to $4,469(WTFz!). This system will be awesome, but damn, that is one hell of a price tag.

If you seriously are going to get this, I am extremely envious.

I had bad/good luck when I was ordering. Ultra extreme just went out of stock so I had to "settle" with zalman 9700 but the memory and mobo got more expensive a day after i ordered.

Heheh... Just got the nod' from the wife. I parted most of it out newegg without monitor a bit over 2K.  I will do this.  The draw back?  The wife gets the XPS.

I couldn't find it all, and I decided on a few different specs.  Hitachi hard drives, maybe a different net card, but yea I basically picked the top components I saw.

OH. I got done using my warranty in chat Dell service and say hello to a replacement hard drive for free.  Wife will get the new drive installed with the XP media (origional software) I'm gonna install Vista Ultimate I bought recently.

-She'll never know...
