A few weeks ago, I realized I should get a job. Asides from the obvious benefit of getting money (yes, I'm "under the roof" of my parents, but while they don't mind paying for food and shit they do mind paying for my gaming...), a job would teach me responsibility and such.

So I applied to Best Buy... I think I'm a pretty solid candidate for what amounts to showing people where merchandise is and trying to sell it to them. I get good grades, go to a very good school, and I have experience working with people at my volunteer job (if you can handle angry and slightly nutty homeless people you can handle anything). Honestly, I don't want to sound arrogant but I think I'm just as knowledgeable and approachable as any person working there. Yet I still haven't heard a thing from them! I have no idea whether or not they've denied my application because these asshats don't have the courtesy to tell you.

So then a few days ago I decided to apply for AMC theatres and a local ice cream shop as well. Once again, I think I'm a pretty solid candidate. I'm a bit worried that the stupid personality test for AMC/Best Buy (they use the same generic application from some company called Unicru) is what screwed me over - it's basically a bunch of questions like "Can people tell if you're angry?" that would be better found out in an interview.

It's not like I'm demanding to be the manager of a store, or like I'm demanding $20 an hour. What the hell am I doing wrong?

I find it a sign that as soon as I read your post, you sign in on sexfire.

As far as getting a job, according to my mom work in a Restaurant as a busboy/dishwasher/kitchen helper.

How she puts it, When(more like if) you go to university, it's a simple job where you get paid decently(the actual wage is meager, but you get $60/day+ in tips alone) and there's always a place that needs one.

P.S. You're not doing anything wrong, the people that run Bestbuy are asshats, they only hire dumbasses and when a decent person that knows wtf they're talking about comes along they sit on their face.

I would suggest applying at places that do not require an online application because that Unicru program is absolute bullshit and can't be counted on. Also make sure you call in every once in a while to see if there are any opening and if you can come in for an interview. If you don't seem interested in the job then most likely they aren't gonna take a second look at you. Just keep pushing and you'll eventually find a job. Oh and applying at three places is nothing, I must have applied at 30+ places before I got my first job.

Do you mean working at a car wash, or washing cars as a private enterprise?

@MysteryJake, I'm just trying to think of other places that would be convenient to get to. If I had a car I'd even apply for jobs at the National Harbor...

Hurricane,

as a high school student i worked at Wall-to-Wall Sound and Video and later at Circuit City where i sold consumer electronics from AV stuff, rack systems, portables, you name it.  it was the BEST job because at the time we were commisioned sales people (this was in 1988).  anyway, let's say i sold a 600 dollar sony home receiver - i'd make 36 dollar commission.  a rack system for 2000 was about 70 bucks commission.  I managed to sell even some high end Harmon Kardon amps and made a pretty penny.  During December of 1989, i worked my ass off and made about 2-3000 bucks.  again, this was in high school and part time (except for xmas week where i worked probably 80 hours).

In selling consumer electronics, you get to deal with people which can be good and bad at times.  you have to figure out what people are really interested in the stuff and which ones are there to stroke you.  You also get employee discounts - which is nice.  At Circuit city they made you wear a coat and tie at the time but whatever - dress code is so that people know whom to contact to get help.  anyway, i thought it was a good job for HS or college student.  along the way, you start learning more about the products so you can pretty much sell anything - you'll gain confidence as you go along.  if you don't know something - tell them you'll find out - simple as that.  as long as you try, most customers are pretty cool.

I did do the movie theater job also.  this sucked big time.  Our AMC theater was run by some major bean counters.  i never was allowed to take breaks.  i was an usher so i had to rip ticket stubs, help people to their seats, and clean the messy theater after the show.  this sucked big time.  nobody respects you.  if there is a disturbance in the theater - you basically have to get in the middle of it and break it up - it's a no win solution.  plus, i got very very hungry since i didn't get any breaks.  once in a long while you might find an unopened candy bar in the theater but...i'm not eating that popcorn.  i saw the movie Diner and know what happens there.  Anyway, it was a disaster job.  wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.  However, i did get to see Die Hard (yeah the original one) like 934739847 times.  big whup.

i've also worked in the restaurant business as a bus-boy where i got paid shit but also got a share (small share) of the waitress tips at the end of the night.  there you'd have to clean up the tables after the customers left, set up the table again, make sure the salad bar was full, etc.  again, it wasn't a very respectful job - customers treat you like you are invisible - so do the restaurant workers.  Then i switched over to Dishwasher which was great - i got better pay but it was pretty dirty and smelly.  other than that, people left you alone and it was actually kind of fun.  was always a race with the waitresses to get the things through the washer so that it didn't back up during lunch/dinner rushes.  Lastly, i switched over to prep-cook and this was good at first due to pay and respect but later turned sour since it was friggin really hot in summer (140 degrees F) and i lost probably 20 pounds.  once you are around food all day you just lose all your appetite.

so i suggest that you still pursue your Best Buy gig.  Ask to speak to the manager in person and tell him that you need to know since you have Circuit City on hold and would rather work at Best Buy.  Use this same tactic at Circuit City in reverse.  Try some local stereo shops - maybe car stereo install places, etc.  Stay away from restaurant and movie theaters - they suck.

good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Second that for Bestbuy.  Overpriced equipment and Geeksquad is a scam for people who don't know jack shit on computers.
If you have a knack for manipulating people into buying overpriced goods then bestbuy is for you.

It is easier to get a job if you have a job.  Strange, but true.  Apply ANYWHERE that will take you, then just keep putting in applications to better places, to work up the ladder.

Unfortunately I can't use that tactic at Circuit City... it's too far away for me to get there without a car

I guess I'll have to track down the manager somehow...

Fuck I wish I had a car, it'd open up a lot of doors. I could apply to Circuit City, GameStop, Guitar Center, and a few other places.

Public transit is the shit in a situation like this.

Luckily my dad works for the company so I get a free lifetime access pass to any bus in the GVRD(Greater Vancouver Regional District)

Construction at OrangeHound's ... high temps & humidity ... heavy lifting ...  sweating ... muscle aches ... gnats & mosquitoes ... low pay.    But, you'll feel satisfied that you've put in a hard days work.

(Worked all day today.  I've got to get this deck/porch and millwork done by August 23 when the painting crews arrive.)

Not in DC... unless your place of employment is near a Metrorail station. The buses here are pretty unreliable in terms of showing up on time. Takes me 15 minutes to get home from school by car. It's taken me up to 2 hours by bus.

For example, the aforementioned National Harbor... the Metro site says it'd take about an hour to get there. Meaning it'd actually probably take two hours, given how buses never arrive at regular schedules.

@Ohound change that 'low' to a 'high'...

Well, clearly you are being too picky about the jobs you will take.   You only want indoor and easy ... you need to take your skirt off, cancel your manicure, grow a mustache and follow the advice in this video:

I'm going into my fucking 4th year as a Civil Engineering student at a prestigious university, I worked two jobs at once my senior year in high school, and a shitty Gamestop is too good to hire me. I recently applied for a graveyard shift at a parking booth near some hotel, I better not be over-qualified for that either

I know how you feel.

Given the choice between a hard job at minimum wage and no job at all, many homeless select the latter ... that's why they are homeless (yeah, I work with them too).

I'd work a hard job, it's just that I'd rather have an easy job.
