I think the actual trip to the wall was a stunt.. make no mistake. But the whole thievery of his prayers? Israelis should know better than to steal prayers from the western wall.
No one doubts that Obama meant his visit to the Wall as a public event. WND reported that Obama’s campaign even distributed campaign posters for supporters to hang on police barricades, which is pretty tacky, if true.   (The posters were certainly there.)  However, the prayer note should have been respected as a private communication between Obama and God, not exploited for circulation boosting.
This is, I think, the cult of celebrity at its ugliest.  It would be akin to bugging a confessional to hear a Catholic candidate’s private conversation between his priest and the Lord.  It assumes no boundaries, no privacy, regardless of the lack of relevance to the issues at hand.  We’re not electing a Pope; we’re electing a President, and his private entreaties to God should remain private.

Shame on the man who stole this note, and the several others who stole the notes of others in their search for Obama’s.  Shame on Maariv and the Times, and anyone else who published Obama’s prayer.  Maybe all of them should be praying to get a life.

He authors a basic standard prayer, big deal. I don't even relate to Obama, and yet this is a major publicity stunt? Shit I am an atheist, I might visit the wall one day, I'd leave something similar out of respect for local traditions and customs (as if my personal beliefs trump all things, in heaven and earth, that are dreamt of in my philosophy).

I am not the maker of myself. As a conception I can use "God" as a label to thank my maker - even though I have no idea how infinity is resolved in the eternal moment and reality has a time-frame in which the processes of nature have laws and have resulted in bio-mechanical animation/organisms that possess the mystery of consciousness. So yeah even this atheist might leave something similar.

I thought the stunt was the whole political trip, to give himself the appearance that he's a world player and not an inexperienced senator from Illinois.

I never really read this story properly the first time. His whole trip is a publicity stunt so I automatically assumed this little nugget of information was just a part of that stunt. Having read the story now though I think the OP is bollocks. The practice of sticking notes in the wall didn't get invented yesterday - there are even companies that offer Israelis an expresso service whereby you phone them in a prayer and they go and stick it in the wall for you. It's standard tourist fare if you visit the wall also: I donned a yarmulke and went up to the wall and got blessed by a rabbi. I might not have stuck a note in the wall but most do. It's actually quite rude and a bit of an intrusion for somebody's notes to be extracted from the wall. The least he can expect - as with all Israelis and tourists - is to have his fucking note left in the bloody thing.

I thought he'd left this note in his hotel room or something. This thread is reeks of ignorance of what visiting the wailing wall usually entails.

Got it, so it shoulda been completely ASSUMED that a figure like Obama could leave a message ANYWHERE including this wall and no one would bother it. Yeah, ok.

The problem is, I do not care what thousands of others do, when a public figure does the same thing it draws attention. The thought they they assumed his note woud not be found or read, and the fake outrage that was displayed when it was is the "bollocks" of this thread.

I don't really see the big deal either but other leaders such as Bush and Clinton have done the whole wall thing without having their notes 'leaked'. Obama should at least have expected similar treatment. Having said that he will play this one up for all it's worth.

Why are you so irate about this publicity stunt, whether it is one or not? Logically speaking you would make sure you write something decent to put in the wall, on the off-chance that the note gets pulled out by someone else - especially when you're a politician. It all seems very logical to me.
