Fucking Georgia declares war on Russia (dumb move, like kicking Superman in the nuts.) and now Russia is saying Fuck you to a cease fire after pummeling them for 72 hours (not that I blame them because Russia had war declared upon them). This be the start of some international shit! Georgia apparently had troops helping our guys in Iraq. I am VERY nervous. Is it Russia and China's time to move in and Fuck us in the process? Oh wait, I forgot, we will all be fine come November when Obama is President and we have done a fine job of Fucking up our own Country ourselves.

I am also wondering what is the proper or historical response to Ceasefires? Is a Country required to grant it?

Georgia got attacked by Russia...its customary to express your displeasure.

Not responding to the ceasefire when you don't have much of a reason to be fighting on the scale you are (i.e. Russia) doesn't look good.

As always there are two sides to every story. Upon hearing of this war starting I instantly assumed 'Fucking imperialist bullyboy Russian scum'. However, upon researching the situation I have realised a number of things.

1. Georgia have very questionable legitimacy in seeking to consolidate control over South Ossetia and Abkhazia - both of which were governed autonomously all throughout the existence of the USSR and on into the era of an independent Georgia. South Ossetians and Abkhazians are completely ethnically and linguistically distinct from Georgians. Both regions attempted to seek inclusion within the post-soviet Russia upon collapse of the USSR, fearing Georgian subjugation/domination.

2. Georgia sent troops into South Ossetia and Abhkazia to place South Ossetians and Abkhazians under their control, explicitly against the rather obvious wishes of these two peoples. You could say that we are witnessing Georgian imperialism.

3. The Russian reaction appears to have been extremely heavy handed. They have complete military superiority over Georgia, who now realise that they made a big mistake and have asked for a ceasefire, yet the Russians continue to pummel them. However, in the fog of war - have Georgia actually withdrawn as they say they have? Do we have the complete picture here?

4. The western nedia has been virulently anti-Russia to a ridiculously unbalanced degree. They haven't fleshed out any of the core issues here and are simply using this war, rightly or wrongly, to demonise Russia.

Cam the last point is the problem, I don't really have much of a reliable source here because from what I read / hear the russians are explicitly anti-georgian and say they are at fault of everything while the georgians say exactly the opposite thing.

I don't think the georgians wouldn't withdraw their troops after a ceasefire. that would be stupid, because as you said they are completely inferior -militarily- to russia. While Russia stated the georgians actually attacked them during a (from what I heard) non-existant ceasefire, as Russia didn't even accept the offer. And are now pushing into all the other georgian territory.

Both sides lie?

and S-ossetia wanted independance from Georgia but that right got denied somewhere early 90's. They've been officially part of Georgia for about 17 years. (except on russian maps)

add to that that s-ossetia is the most rich place in the entire region, meaning both sides want it - and now instead of independance they'll be forced to be part of Russia, atleast that's what I think will happen.

More deep thought from usmarine, completely oblivious to the realities on the ground. Obviously not big on South Ossetian or Abkhazian rights, eh? Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Georgia roll the tanks in to regions of Georgia where they weren't welcome? Kind of like what Serbia did to Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Kosovo and all of the other 'parts of Yugoslavia' that are now countries in their own right, some of which being down to western intervention??? Such rationalising is probably beyond usmarine...

but now instead of being opressed with sticks the population got shelled and bombed by air attacks all day. I don't really see that as a solution, far from actually.

besides now they're in the midst of a war, which without western intervention - which probably will happen - (I hope not physically though) won't end anytime soon.

Russian has been handing passports out like they're going out of fashion to the S Ossetians. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if they really want to be part or Russia so badly they can go move there. It's not like there's not enough space...
