The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Just out of interest, what is it you don't like about it?

The macbook is simple, smooth and strong. The samsung just looks too boxed and bulky to me.

Yep, I just don't like the stereotypical PC attitude that "PC > macs" is every conversation because it isn't. I know you know that, and I know others do too, but there are some that just don't get that...at least respect the product. I guarantee if Microsoft had came out with that laptop, exact same spec etc, it wouldn't get as much criticism. But hey, they say any media is good media

Anyways...
So you're saying it's not better than the Air? Despite the higher specs and much, much better connectivity options (3x more USB ports, VGA and HDMI out (not gay micro DVI), gigabit ethernet (not including that on the Air was a huge mistake) and a card reader).

It is better than the Air, no two ways about it, and I'd be shocked if it is more than 3/4 the price of the Air.
Sorry, poor wording. I didn't mean that in case the Air is better. Spec wise the Samsung is better, looks wise well I'd debate otherwise (except for the top - do like the Samsung there). I find looks are important, and a lot of people here don't.

I just don't like the over-simplicity. They sacrifice form over function, according to me, and I just hate white when it comes to laptops, too "screaming", if you know what I mean. Hell, the 17" Macbooks don't even have a numeric keyboard, not to mention anything to make access faster. They sacrifice function for form. German steel-factory design, yes please!

How is that thing bulky at 0.66 of an inch thin? Hell, I still have my P4 Compaq which is about 2.5 inches thick and weighs about 6 lbs.

You buy a laptop for usage, not for putting in your house as an ornament. It's a tool; it can be pretty at that.... but sacrificing a lot of your "tool" for some more "pretty" shit is beyond stupid.

In a purely technological view and a NORMAL computer view, the Samsung rapes the shit out of the MacBook air. If you want to go into "lovely little looks" then, yeah, maybe the macbook is better. If someone actually wants to get a small laptop to work, and use properly, they will not look beyond this. If someone is so self-conscious and vain and has no idea why they need a laptop, then they will go for the Air. Up to this point in time, there was nothing to challenge it's "tiny awesomness"; now Samsung has come along.

Out of curiosity, where did you get teh size specs? I couldn't see them on the link ... air seems a lot thinner

Also noting VGA ... MBA has DVI (micro)

From the snippet taken from the article in the very first post -

If you’ve fallen in love with the MacBook Air but just can’t stand the thought of muddling through OS X, becoming a snooty Mac user, or suffering through Apple’s skin-deep quality and often-shoddy workmanship, Samsung is aiming its .66-inch-thin X360 laptop directly at you.

Ah, thanks. Because there's no way that its thickest point is 0.66". If they made the side nicer I'd really consider it, but it's just too ugly from all angles except the top. Top is v. nice though

Plus, that ain't ugly.

But Kyle makes a good point, maybe he is focusing too much on the aesthetics, but I'd say that how a notebook looks is somewhat important. Think about it, most people won't give a crap about how your desktop tower case looks like because most people won't see it anywhere except in your bedroom/room/etc. Whereas with any notebook, chances are, it's bound to travel around with you where many more people can see it. Wouldn't you want something that looks remotely decent over something that looks like a slab of plastic that's gone through the wash cycle one too many times? Obviously, looking over other, more important parts of the notebook, for the overall look is foolish, but it's like buying new clothes - you look for the things you like, then see if it looks good t?o you. You wouldn't go roaming around on the streets if you found a shirt that had the "specs" you wanted (say, cotton, medium, short-sleeved) but looked like utter shit to you. You'd throw that back on the rack, and look for another one that suits your tastes.

I like pretty things, what's the problem? I don't want my life to be filled with ugly things when I have the option to have nice things. It is really nice from the top, but from everywhere it is ugly, at least in my opinion.

Never noticed this reply, whoops.

I wouldn't be sacrificing a lot if I only need 1 USB port, or can get a hub if needsbe, would I? I don't need HDMI because there's an HDTV in the house. I prefer DVI over VGA. The only thing connectivity wise the Samsung has that the Air doesn't have which I would like is the second USB port (although a wireless hub can be of use there) and the card reader. Again, read the last sentence there. In a purely technological view the Samsung is better (although I'm noting that many of specs are the same). I ain't self conscious about myself ... I like pretty things. Is there something wrong with that? I'd prefer going through life through nice things that are marginally worse because aesthetics are important to me. I do not want an ugly brick as a phone. My V3i doesn't have teh same features, as say, the W800i (it's the only one I can think of at the minute) but it is far more prettier and I use my phone a lot - so it needs to be like that.

I think a lot of people have misunderstood my position here ... I'm not throwing threats and negativity towards the Samsung. I like the idea of it very much, and the top looks *really* nice. But I prefer the Air. What's left to understand?

Dude, that's one of the gayest things I've read on BF2s, ever. And that says a lot.

A computer is a tool, something you use to do things with. A computer is not the main attraction, but it's the wagon that carries it between shows. You're not supposed to look at the computer, but what's displayed on the screen. Paying a bit extra for something very thin and portable, that I understand, but paying extra and sacrificing utility, for one thin and portable thing over another thin and portable thing, because it looks better, is something that I really don't see the point of, when it comes to computers.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. I wouldn't be "sacrificing utility" for things that I wouldn't need? As stated in my post above, a wireless hub could function everything that I would there. When I am somewhere with a laptop I don't need to plug in anything, except a charger maybe. I don't mean to sound rude: but this is why your room is filled with junk and mine is, well, not. If I am around something for a long time (with the exception of people that I know of course) I want it to look pretty. I'd rather have one nice looking desk than ten ugly desks. The nicer one serves no extra purpose but visual pleasing, and that is important to me.

Also a big part is the OS. Im starting to like OS X, its simple, more secure than XP. People will buy a mac just because they don't want to use XP and im sure people wouldn t consider buying a Mac if they had no reason too, So its more down to personal preference.

Not so much more secure, but less viruses on the mac platform. OSX is nice and simple, sometimes too simple for my tastes if that makes sense, but I do like it. But then again, I like Vista too. Like you said, all down to personal preference..

Oh no. Here we go with the more secure part of it. OSX was hacked in 3 minutes on the MacBook Air the moment it was released. There is security for you.

OSX is a very nice operating system, and I like it, but however intuitive it may be, it's bland when you go a bit deeper. If you want to argue OS's, then go grab Linux. A bit of both mashed together.
