Massive amounts of people playing the single-player game simultaneously and all uploading information / statistics to an online server (i.e. Steam achievements). It is true that Spore's generated universe is 'Massive', and it is also true that it uses online-elements to download planets and other races... but there's nothing
integrated about those two elements. The game is massive; the game has online parts; but it's not
massively multiplayer. It's no more Multiplayer than the Sims community sites were that allowed you to download custom houses/furniture/clothing etc.
That feature was really overhyped and misunderstood because I think in the very early press-releases about the game (several years back), the design team did actually make it out as if the Space stage and the inter-planetary stages were going to be Multiplayer and shared. The whole 'Multiverse' concept they had going on explained this pretty well, except they bailed on the idea when it became too much of a burden and time-consumer during development
