Close minded to mean he doesn't accept your point of view (which must be right)?  If you haven't noticed the left is just as if not more vicious and intollerant of their political counterpart.  Does that mean the Dems hate the Republicans?  Probably some of them do, just like some D hating R's.  They are a sad breed, the Cindy Sheehans and Pelosi types.  And if I was one of them, I'd be apologizing to you for something Bush and "global warming" did to you.  -But, I'm not so here's your apology __. 


I really had to laugh at the  "Recklessly Burning and devouring its resouruces" jab.  You do know about the bans on drilling for oil and the Endangered species act (keeping property owners from developing thier land)?  I guess then there is no reason for all the "snow birds" to take vacations down here.

If you don't live here, we don't expect you to understand.  Frankly, a lot of us don't even care if you understand.  To be honest, some of the people here don't seem to understand either; those, I worry about.

The flag of the US is so sacred it's mass produced in China for pennies so people can put it on their car bumper/motorcycle helmet/thong bikini/bong/condom/banana hammock.

Yes, the flag has been cheapened by mass production and marketing of it.  For those blankets and cloting lines, I feel nothing positive.  But that does not lessen the import of the flag when it is displayed or used properly.

As I've said many times before, I understand the respect and reverence for what the flag stands for, but seriously... what the hell?

You type that you understand, but from your post it is obvious that you either don't get it or just enjoy 'poking the bear'... For myself and some other Americans that gaze upon Old Glory, they don't just see a flag, they see a representation of a proud nation, full of compassionate people. They recognize the souls of countless American Heroes that paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country men.  Call it tradition or call it an "iconic symbol of worship"..  I can't after reading your posts here expect you to understand any logical argument that would change your mind.  And, I don't really care... I'd say something smug about traditions and your Queens/Kings, but it'd be falling on deaf ears.  You just don't get it.

Actually you pledge allegiance to the flag as asymbol of your nation. In other words you pledge allegiance to your nation - as the latter is symbolised by the flag - not the flag itself.

Your affiliation is with the values for which the flag stands, not the fucking cloth. A symbol has nothing to do with the material world. So if you're making such a big fuss about a few flags that were thrown away then it is YOU who don't fucking get it.

I agree with you, it is not icon worship.  But the flag is a representation of the ideals of our nation.  The flag is not the manifestation of our our nation, but is the symbol of it.  And the flag is not the only symbol.  Our Constitution, for example.  Our armed forces vow to defend the Constitution of the United States, not to defend a piece of land. 

The importance of the United States comes not from the land it holds, or the people that populate it.  It comes from the ideals that created the nation.  The Constitution.  The Declaration of Independence.  The Bill of Rights.  And those values are imputed into our flag.  We put so much value in our flag as a representation of our nation that we add a star each time another state joins the Union.  Every star, every stripe, every color has meaning.  How you treat the flag is considred representative (by many Americans) of how you think of and would treat the nation. 

We are not fanatic about it, but we do take it seriously.  Especially those of us who served in the military take it seriously. If you don't get it, you don't get it.  If you were an American and did not understand, I would be dissapointed.  As you are a (yet another) European who doesn't understand, oh well.
