There will always be pirates. Game producers should be prepared for that and should expect it.
In other words, EA should suck it up.

But most people pirate games because they don't want to spend money on them, so going after pirates is almost the same as going after people who aren't buying the damn thing to begin with.

I mean, if am not going to spend money on Spore, but I still want to play it, then am I hurting anyone? I wasn't going to spend any money on the game anyway?

On the other hand I plan on buying Far Cry 2 and Red Alert 3, which is ironic in a way because I was introduced to those series when I pirated the first Far Cry and Command and Conquer Generals. So in that respect piracy served as free advertising, I wouldn't have paid money for the sequels if I hadn't gotten the earlier game for free.

Buy your games you cheap b*****ds!!

Game makers are turning away from the PC scene and yet you expect them to churn out great games and expect to get them for free! Unbelievable!!
Yet for some reason Activision/Infinity ward are receiving massive profits with a good single player and addictive multiplayer with COD4. The glitches and errors are minimal and the patches actually fix problems like it is suppose to. There is basic protection software (cd in cd drive). COD4 online is the 2nd most played game on xfire behind WOW.

I was saying that pirating a game solely because of DRM isn't going to do anything to decrease the DRM.

I'm not going to spend any money on this soda, but I still want it. I'm sure insurance will cover it. No one is getting hurt.

But DRM doesn't reduce piracy, it's redundant and costly software that the removal of which would save everyone.

Bad analogy is bad.

But I wasn't going too buy them in the first place so I didn't exactly cost anyone anything by pirating them. In fact the opposite, as my piracy was the best advertising possible, had I not pirated those games I would not have bought the other games in the series. The makers of the games made money from me pirating them that they wouldn't have made if I hadn't pirated.

So basically piracy isn't nearly as bad as the companies who make stuff make it out to be and you're a douche-bag.

You clearly, clearly, don't understand that the effectiveness has nothing to do with how EA perceives it.

Bad analogy is bad.
Without elaborating on why it is bad, it looks like you are incapable of reply and thus got owned.

Can you tell us how EA does perceive it?

It's bad because it doesn't fit what we're talking about at all. You're getting another company to buy something for you by lying.

Whereas Docta who was never going to give the company money, downloaded it, found out that he liked it and decided to buy the sequels.

nukchebi0 wrote:

What difference does it make? They made a sale that they wouldn't have made without him pirating the first ones.

Theres a lawsuit against EA somewhere in California...it said something about spores DRM having a form of spyware/botnet on it.  It supposedly installs itself to the kernel of your machine giving it higher rights than you and it is uninstallable since it binds itself with files your system needs.  It monitors you hardrware changes and what programs your running and it can disable certain tasks or programs or run some depending on what it wants to do.  It also uses up recources and you cant end the process without crashing your computer and at startup, it gathers loads of information making your startup time longer.  nowhere in the EULA does it say that it installs this software and it doesnt ask you if you want the software on there.  So it acts like a botnet...except it doesnt ddos or use your computers for malicious things, it just spys and annoys you and some people have reported it breaking certain vista functions.  the only way to get rid of it is to reformat.  or buy a new harddrive.

I disagree. Customer always wins. They do it first, we do it after. Piracy will always be here, but if they put more trust in us, then they will get more out of us. I have bought every game I truly love ( with the exception of PES2008 on the PC... wouldn't call it true love though ) and will keep on doing so if they give me a game, not a fucking pathetic DRM license bullshit. I would have already had to pay for a new spore because I have reformatted my HDD 6 times. Pathetic.
I totally agree with Zimmer on this one. I will buy a game play it for a bit unisntall it and come back to it in a few months. Hell, I have installed/uninstalled Diablo II about 5 times and BF2 like 6 or 7 times.

EA doesn't listen to use anyway, why should we listen to them?

well i refuse to allow a program to modify my registry without my permission full stop

i dont see the harm in downloading a program/game off the net and using it, if you eventually buy it...its practically like a trial except you get full functionality.   What makes it worse is a lot of companies give really excessive advertising saying that their program is number 1, best thing money can buy, greatest release of the year, etc, etc...then you install it and its a piece of shit.

EA brought it upon themselves. I was going to buy the game too, I was very excited even. However, they put this install limit bullshit and DRM poo on the disk and I'm just not going to deal with it at all.

I'm not going to pirate the game and I'm not going to buy it. They don't deserve a second of my time. This also put the final nail in the EA coffin for me. I will never purchase another game developed or published by them.

Selling games on ebay after you have finished them for second hand use has been going on for years. So once you're tired of this piece of shit(probably after a week) you're stuck with it.

There's another reason not to support EA's by not buying this craporama.

They need to implement a software scan for games,

like "you need to close "xxxx" program to start the game" and if you bypass it PB should ban u insta for it.

its possible but "they" think sales go down on this.

Not necessarily. There's plenty of other developers and publishers out there. Valve, SCEA, Insomniac, Infinity Ward, Ubisoft, Take 2/rockstar... the list is pretty substantial. I think the last game I bought from them was BF2142 a couple of years ago, and since then I've probably purchased close to 20 games.

That's kinda what DRM does, but it's not hard to bypass/disable it.
