I have a grudge against Nike this year when it comes to my favourite running shoe Skylon. It was an excellent running shoe, very comfy and light but they decided to make the soil harder-no so comfy anymore. The thing is more and more people are deciding to run to loose weight and for heavier runners the last year's model is too soft and the soil would collapse under their weight. So you have people that want the old, comfy Skylon and you have people who need harder soil. They wont make two different versions of this very popular shoes but only one. We can all wear the one with the harder soil whilst heavy runners can't wear the old Skylon, with a softer soil. I don't like what they are doing, some that have been running for a while and love this shoe are disappointed.

Sorry if I went a bit off topic

@Fusion go to a store, test your feet on a machine which tells you if you have any problems with your feet so you can buy the appropriate shoe. You can really fuck up your feet even more if you don't but the right shoes, especially if you're older.

Anyone have any idea what this service or machine is called so I can find out where I can go to do this?

Aren't Nike Shox overpriced, crap shoes? That's always been my impression.

The four bigger brands when it comes to running shoes are Nike, Adidas, Asics, and New Balance. A lot of people swear by their Asics and New Balance, but I can't really comment on that because I've never owned a pair of their shoes. Although I have tried my friend's New Balances, they were pretty nice though they didn't fit me well.

That said, I'll just give my two cents on the former two: I've owned three pairs of shoes from those two brands total (not much, but hopefully it might give you an idea). However, keep in mind that everything I'm saying is from like.. 2 years ago. I've been swimming instead of running lately. I've owned a pair of Nike Pegasus, Adidas Supernova (forgot the variant, but it had suction cup looking things on the bottom), and my current, badly in need of replacement Nike Air Max Moto. It feels to me that Nike makes shoes that are lighter but less cushioned, while Adidas makes significantly heavier shoes with much more cushion. I can easily tell you that of the three, the Adidas was my favourite pair, simply because it had the most cushion. It sucked when I had to do speed workouts, you feel much lighter in my Nike shoes, but even after a 10 mile trail run on the weekends, or 16x400m, whatever, my feet were as happy as clams in those shoes. The Nike shoes I mentioned aren't bad in any sense, they're fairly comfortable as well, don't be put off by them.

Another important thing that you shouldn't overlook if you plan on running are socks. Make sure that your feet don't have too much room to wiggle around in your shoes. If you wear socks that generate a lot of friction, you'll get blisters that hurt like hell when you run. Now, you don't have to get socks specifically made for running, but it might help. (Our coach bought all of us a pair of running socks for race days and stuff, they felt a little better from my normal socks).

If you can, go to a store specifically made for runners. They'll usually help you figure out how you run, and what kind of shoe would be the best for you. The one I went to lets their customers take a pair out for running for a decent chunk of time, which helps gauge how comfortable the shoe was a lot better than just taking a walk around the aisle of shoes.

Smithereener Nike shox really are the worst shoes for running-spring isn't really what I call cushioning, they arent soft at all and not very balanced. Tell Fusion how do you like Max moto, I told him to try them cos he wanted well cushioned, soft shoes. And from my personal experience the best shoe manufacturer ladder would be something like this: Mizuno, Asics, Nike and others, Adidas is a bit behind. Middle class Mizuno/Asics are as good as the best/most expensive Adidas shoes. I also have Pegasus which are one of the most popular shoes here and are well balanced and neutral but not as well cushioned as some other Nike shoes.

@meth I have Asics racer7 and they are probably the best running shoes I ever had. I posted the image of them here:
http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=113292&p=2
But to be honest I tested around 7 pairs of Asics shoes and most of them didn't fit well and were really inappropriate for my feet. So maybe its Asics/Nike for me and New Balance for someone else. Test them, thats all I can recommend. testing is going on everywhere you just need to find the locations, I was lucky enough to be invited to testing so I didn0t have to search hehe.

I really liked my Pegasus, second after my Novas. The Motos are nice, I believe they are a bit more cushioned than the Pegasus (about a 1 year gap between when I bought the Pegasus and Motos), but if I had to choose between the two, I felt a lot more comfortable in the Pegasus. I can't really comment on your heirarchy, having never tried Asics of Mizuno, but I can kind of agree that Adidas is a bit behind on the scale. My Novas were $85 USD (though I got em for $70), which I consider to be the amount for a decent - good pair of shoes, I have to say, I haven't found many other Adidas shoes I liked as much.
