Arming these tankers, may make the pirates more susceptible to arm themselves and use stronger force. They are desperately trying to fight crippling poverty and have turned to piracy to survive.

The shipping needs to be done with better protection, yes, but that's what the UN is for. It's a daunting task, but I don't think arming crews and mercenaries to fight off pirates is a planned solution only a rash one.

You must get pretty close to the tanker to cause anything, ie pirates in dingy's. Less pirates = better for the world. I doubt they use that money to buy food or support their community tbh.

I didn't say they would, but they have turned to piracy to survive for themselves. The country is a failed state. There's nothing more to it than that. Piracy might be the only option they have to get out of the country, let alone feed themselves.

As for the pirates in dingy's, they still have rpgs to fire at a tanker full of crude oil. You made that point several times in your conversation with playboy (lol username).

The ecological disaster alone from them cracking the hull of one of these tankers is massive. I am aware that the tankers have multiple hulls, but an oil spill could result from a well place or even reckless explosion, and what if the crude ignites? Millions of dollars worth of crude is lost as well as potentially the lives of crew and pirates.

The UN frigates should be patrolling closer to the Somali coast, or at least co-ordinating with the oil tankers.

Plus, the pirates are navigating using satellite phones, (as well as making their demands on them), it's not hard to track those signals.
