  • Is my LCD screen leaking and in dire need of replacement?

OK, I dropped my Sony Ericsson K550i yesterday on the floor. I noticed a few hours after that, two lines of dead pixels next to each other. I woke up this morning and the lines have grown. They're just two black lines of dead pixels.

Is the screen leaking and when those black lines reach the edge, will I have liquid crystals oozing out into my phone? I don't see any cracks in the display at all beneath the plastic screen. The camera still works and all the functions of the phone seem to work just fine.

Should I look into buying an LCD replacement kit? Or can I just ignore the damage and just put up with having two black lines across the middle of my display?

The warranty expired last month (the tech gods hate me), so I can't send it in for replacement on warranty repair. I am going to see how much the store wants to fix it, though, but if it's more than €30, I may just buy a replacement kit if it needs replacing.

So? Thoughts?

LCD liquid turns transparent as soon as it comes into contact with air.

It is also highly poisonous, soaks into clothing and is easily absorbed into the body through the skin.

Burn any clothes that you've had the phone in a pocket of and seek medical advice immediately.

If it is indeed leaking, you run the risk of it coming into contact with your phones battery, if the battery explodes in your pocket you will receive catastrophic injuries.

The battery acid, fire and toxic LCD liquid will burn you and those around you.

Seek a replacement immediately.

That only happens with Li-Polymer and Li-Ion batteries.

What type does the K550i have?

I lol'd.

You should be fine, I had the entire screen of my w580i crack in my pocket.   I'm still here, and I don't have 6 fingers or I'm not retarded.

tell em it broke b4 expiration but got worse in the last week, but you were busy with school. If they fuck you, tell em your switching carriers, or pick up a second line for 10 bucks a month and get a new phone

This is Europe - that doesn't work. Trust me, if I was back home in the States, I would do that. I got a new phone (an upgrade, even) from VZW when I bitched at customer service in the store long enough. Took 2 hours, but I got a new model.

Find out how much a repair guy will fix it for, I wouldn't trust myself doing a job like that with a cheap custom kit. At least if the repair guy does break your phone you'll get your money back for a new one.

Good luck.

Actually, I went up there to try and use the story (it started a couple weeks ago, I ignored it, now it's worse) - and it worked. Turns out the Sony Ericsson has a 2 year guarantee on it! I read something from like Norway or whatever that was in English and they said only one year. The guy at the cell phone shop for my carrier said 2 years, though. BITCHIN!

So I sent the phone off for repairs. If it costs anything at all for the repair (it shouldn't, but it could), then it'll be a €35 fee. Shit, with shipping included, that's what the repair kit on the Internet would have cost. With the kit I could have had it in about a week and repaired it same day, but this way I wait 2-3 weeks, have a good tracking number, and it gets done professionally.

I got some Nokia phone to borrow to get me through the next few weeks (I have an old SE sitting in my desk, but it's like 6 years old and almost dead). Fucking ugly as sin. They didn't have any SE phones at all, so I gotta put up with Nokia's GUI and I hate it. Nokia phones feel so damn cheap and they're so ugly. Only Nokia I would ever buy would be one of their higher end models ... but even then ...
