Do you use an uninterruptible power supply? Also, if you're worried about data, I'd recommend regular backups.

Oh. Fuck me. So damage can be done to your harddrives with a PSU failure? y/n?

This would be the worst thing ever. OCZ has already replied and are sending a replacement immediately.

Ok, so the advice, in general, is to get a new PSU altogether.

I have an E6600, 8800GTS 640MB, Gigabyte P35 DS4. Recommendations?
PSU failure can take out anything that's connected to it. Hard drive/motherboard failure is decently common according to my dad, who has been working with electronics longer than most of you have been alive.

Not to say there still isn't a significant chance that your data is fine, but you may want to start preparing for the worst...

Obviously if it did take out your hard drives, it's only an electrical and not a mechanical failure. My dad actually bought another, identical hard drive off ebay, swapped the drive boards, and got all my data off one of the hard drives without too much trouble.

It's not very common for any other components to be taken out by PSU failure. It can happen, but rarely.

Modern PSUs have lots of stuff in to prevent this from happening. You have to get multiple component failure within the PSU quite quickly for it to be a problem. I've even had PSUs that I've built (it's not very difficult), and have failed very dramatically (exploding, bursting into flames etc.), not cause any damage to otehr components because the voltage regulation components held on long enough to prevent any damage.

It's nowhere near as common as you seem to make out. It happens in maybe 3-5% of cases of PSU failure.

Well, I will prepare for the worst. Thanks for the info guys, greatly appreciated.

Just purchased the Corsair HX520 last night, so it will come on the 23rd. I will find out what has happened then...

Everything is working perfectly.

I am so happy.
