Ok so let me get this straight.  To overclock to 3.6Ghz I need to...

Change multiplier to 9.
Lower the DRAM frequency to 533.
Raise FSB to 400
Apply correct CPU voltage to create stability.

Of course doing all this in small increments.  Correct me if i'm wrong please.
You're right

Messing with the FSB termination, GTL and PLL voltage will help too

uhm.. with a P5Q and a E8400 all you need to do is adjust the FSB to 400Mhz since the multiplier is already at 9x
Voltage is not needed if you stick to 400Mhz @ 9x and then adjust your RAM multiplier so that they are still running at their standard Mhz

not all E8400 will hit 3.6GHz on stock V. Plus if you leave it at auto the BIOS will ramp it up for you to much higher levels than needed

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

What?
But they are all made by the same manurfacturer after the same specs with the same materials :S

Not all chips are created equal. Some will OC well into the 4GHz range on stock, others will need more V at 3.4GHz.

The problem is the method they use to manufacture the CPUs.  Its not always exact...

Sounds odd to me with todays industry standards and quality control :S

Look at your VID. It's the minimum Voltage they need to run stable at their stock speed according to intel. Some chips have 1.35V, others will go as low as 1.15V. The only thing intel guarantees is that the chip will run at stock speed at the VID. Luckily for us the 45nm process intel uses is very mature and nearly all chips will hit the same OC, even the lower binned ones

Brain overload...

Going to bed now, will see if I have the capacity to understand that when I get up...

edit: also, VID ?

I think it's voltage ID. Not really sure.

It's just the voltage your chip needs to run at stock speeds according to intel

i.e. The stock voltage isn't the same for all chips
