Just for the record, I am now working on my brothers computer because he is having troubles gettin it to recognize his HDD's. He had the jumpers set up wrong, so now that I got that corrected, I got all the way to the Windows logon screen. I clicked his user name and the computer rebooted?! So now, after that, it loads the black screen saying if u wanna load Windows in Safe mode, with command prompt, or normally.

I got it to load with command prompt. So should I run chkdsk now? Or something else?

Or try repair install.
I looked into that and bookmarked a few pages about it, something like THIS?

Sounds easy enough, although I doubt it always go according to plan. So its probably wise to do some backing up of data.

If he has Professional on there, but I only have a XP Home cd, will it install Home or repair his Professional?

Also: On boot up under Detecting IDE Drives there is a message that reads:

"Note Secondary IDE channel no 80 connector cable installed"

Run chkdsk, it would also be a good idea to run scan disc as it will move data out of any bad sectors he may have.

Oh ya, I did run chkdsk last night.

Code:

chkdsk c: /f /r
^That. It went through its fixing thing and repairing bullshit, but it still doesn't boot safely to windows. (ie, it restarts itself after the xp load screen everytime)

I would try a different cable and/or make sure it's connected correctly...snug
and i would hook up the drive that has the OS on it first... get it to work and then add the second drive...

edit: also with the reboot... could be a virus or a bad Power Supply...

The secondary IDE cable is for the CD/DVD drives. And it DOES recognize them in BIOS.

How do you perform a reinstallation of Windows XP, sometimes called a repair installation?

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1. When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2. Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3. Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4. In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.
I am at the XP Setup screen and there is no XP install that I can select to repair.  It just says C: Partition1 [NTFS] 152617 MB (73848 MB Free)

I read HERE That if my XP install isn't selectable I can do this:
1.Boot with XP CD or 6 floppy boot disk set.

2. Press R to load the Recovery Console.

3. Type bootcfg.

4. This should fix any boot.ini errors causing setup not to see the  XP OS
      install.

5. Try the repair install.
Great, that only brings u to a bootcfg menu where u have numerous options...

The bootcfg /default command sets the default operating system option in the Boot menu. The command selects the operating system entry automatically.

^This should hopefully make XP appear on the XP setup page...

Well I've had no luck getting the XP installation to appear in the setup screen.

Possible. He has an older Antec 300w, is it possible its not powerful enough to run his system? Or is it just faulty? His comp is pretty basic with average components.

Ok, are there any certified Microsoft Techies here? I found this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

That has a step by step thing on how to restore my system. I followed the first step, and got his computer 2 boot in safe mode. Should I go to system restore under the program menu and pick an old restore point? Or should I run the 'Guided Help' program Microsoft made and let it do it all on its own?

Edit: WTF!!!!1 There are NO restore points available? Not even system made restore points?

Hmmm....Hmmm. Well I just went ahead and installed XP on this 40 gig instead and set it up as his master so now he can access all his shit on his other drive and has a clean install. BUT I didn't even think about Windows 7. So it's out huh? How much does it cost anyway?

2g.

If you're prepared to make a live OS, get BartPE. I use it frequently to move restore points. System Restore is a dick, I swear it doesn't even look for points half the time, slack cunt; Recovery Console is just a pain in the rectal cavity.

i was thinkin bout installin a dif OS on a dif drive and toying around with it. I never did try linux, i'm sure its pretty cool.

BartPE huh??? Sounds perfect, DAMNIT CHeez why didn't u suggest that 7 hours ago?

But, seriously it looks like BartPE is just used for recovering data? It wont actually repair the OS so you'd have to repair/reinstall it anyway rite?

i kinda followed this: http://webcast.broadcastnewsroom.com/ar … ?id=8658-0

Up until the point where I got to the system restore folder and there were NO restore points in there...So i said Fk it, i'll just install XP...

Whatever is included in the OS it can do, basically a little more powerful than Safe Mode.

It also says "well fuckya" to permissions, e.g. getting to the restore points in System Volume Information and moving them to C:\Windows\system32\config and naming them accordingly.

You can also slipstream software into the OS.

If you like doing this and are still in high school, you could go for a two-year associates as part of your high school credits (depending on where you live, I suppose; worked for me in Washington).

From there you can start stacking certifications, get a high-paying job and make someone else fix your computer.
